Lamu architecture is influenced by Persian, Omani and Indian details. Traditional hand carved ornate plaster niches are called Vidaka or Zidaka. Daka means ‘niche’ and some of the oldest examples of Vidaka date back to 14th Century ruins on the East African Coast. Apart from being decorative and beautiful, they are used to display Chinese porcelain, books and other valuables, oil lamps sometimes a copy of the the Koran in Swahili homes.
