In Russia, some women are marrying soldiers headed to Ukraine with a chilling goal: claiming the money after their deaths. 😵

Nicknamed “black widows,” they meet servicemen, sometimes just before they leave for the front, and marry them quickly.

If the soldier is killed, the wife can claim a share of the substantial death benefits paid to families. 💸

The Wall Street Journal reported the case of Sergey Khandozhko, a 40-year-old who married just one day after enlisting in 2023. After he died in combat, his family challenged the marriage in court, arguing that his wife had only married him to collect the compensation.

The sums involved can be huge: some families receive the equivalent of more than €100,000. In response, several families have taken legal action in Russian courts to have these suspected fraudulent unions annulled. 💶
