There is a particular kind of quiet out in Kimuka that Nairobi forgot how to make.

You notice it the first time you stand there. The air moves differently. You can see the hills without leaning out of a window. Children have somewhere to run that isn't a corridor.

And it is not far. That is the part people get wrong about this place. It is close enough that you keep your life in town and still come home to space.

The best thing though is simpler than all of that. It is yours. Nobody reviews it, nobody raises it, nobody asks you to be out by the end of the month. You plant something and you get to watch it grow up.

Nobody in this city is far from work. They are behind other people. Distance stopped being the real problem years ago and most of us never updated how we think about it.

Which makes the question different from the one everyone asks. It was never how far out is too far. It is what you are standing on at the end of the same amount of time.

It takes a while. That part is true and nobody says it out loud.

There are months where it is a foundation and a lot of patience. Weekends where you drive out, walk around, and almost nothing has moved since the last time. Conversations with relatives who keep asking when.

And then one evening the door closes behind you and the house is quiet and it is yours, and nobody can ask you to leave it.

Everyone who has done it says the same thing. They never talk about the waiting. They talk about that first night.

It starts with the ground. Everything else is just time, and time passes anyway.

Astrol, Ngong Town. 9:00am. That is also where our offices are, so get there early and ask us whatever you want before we move.
