Everyone in our high school came from a humble background, but there were a few exceptions. In form two, the principal interrupted Kiswahili lesson to introduce a new student, Dan Juma. He said Dan Juma was going to be one of us, so could we please welcome him and make him feel at home? We knew there and then that Dan Juma was a dynasty because no other student had received such a treatment.
Our dorm prefect, eager to show he was in charge, quickly updated the Sweepers' list to include Dan Juma, but Dan refused to even look at the broom, leave alone sweep. The prefect was so furious he brought this matter before the school head during our open forum where we were allowed to speak freely with no consequences, but if you spoke freely against the administration some dubious charges were slapped on you, like snoring loudly, which was against the school's constitution, and then the wrath of the deep state would be on you.
One day, my friend spoke freely and said the school diet was unhealthy. He was tired of githeri. He wanted rice! The principal told him his feelings were valid and respected. That he was happy the boy was ready to give his life for rice. That evening, when he was found playing football with un-tucked shirt, he was beaten mercilessly and forced to be a day scholar for the rest of the term.
Anyway, the prefect implicated Dan Juma. When asked to defend himself, Dan Juma said, "I told the prefect I am allergic to dust but he told me I must sweep, even if it will cost my life."
"So you are one of those prefects abusing power?" The arrow was suddenly pointing at the prefect. "From today, you are no longer a prefect!"
Ala! For the first time in the history of that school, a prefect was wrong. We could not believe it! Who was this Dan Juma? Did he have the principal's nudes and was blackmailing him? Was he his son? We were even more shocked when he smoked w**d and when done he said, "Let's pray!" as if he knew something we did not know about w**d.
