FERITIGATION
Introduction
Fertigation is the process of providing essential nutrients to plants to promote healthy growth and development.
Types of Fertilizers
i. Organic (e.g., compost, manure, green manure)
ii. Inorganic (e.g., chemical fertilizers like NPK)
iii. Natural (e.g., fish bone meal, alfalfa meal)
Methods of Fertigation
a) Soil application (broadcasting, banding, side-dressing)
b) Foliar application (spraying on leaves)
c) Fertigation (injecting into irrigation water)
Timing of Fertigation
Pre-plant (before planting)
Post-plant (after planting)
Top-dressing (during growth stages)
Key Nutrients
i. Nitrogen (N) - promotes leaf growth
ii. Phosphorus (P) - promotes root development and flower/fruit formation
iii. Potassium (K) - promotes overall plant health and resistance
Soil Testing
pH testing (acidity/alkalinity)
Nutrient analysis (NPK and other micronutrients)
The 4 Rs of fertigation
These are a framework for optimizing fertilizer use. Using the 4Rs can help improve crop yields, reduce waste, and minimize environmental impact.
i. Right Source: Choose the right type of fertilizer for your crop and soil.
ii. Right Rate: Apply the right amount of fertilizer to avoid over- or under-fertilization.
iii. Right Time: Apply fertilizer at the right time for your crop's growth stage.
iv. Right Place: Apply fertilizer in the right location, such as near the roots or in the soil zone where it can be most effective.
