WHEN A BRIDGE STARTS SHOWING DISTRESS, MAINTENANCE CAN’T WAIT.

These images tell a story that every infrastructure professional should take seriously.

Visible concrete spalling, exposed aggregate, surface deterioration and deteriorated bridge bearing areas are not merely cosmetic defects. They are warning signs that require proper inspection, assessment and timely intervention.

A bridge may continue carrying traffic while deterioration progresses beneath the surface. Columns, bearings, joints and drainage systems are critical components of the bridge’s load path and overall durability.

🔍 What should happen when these defects are observed?
Inspect – Establish the extent and cause of deterioration.
Assess – Determine whether structural capacity or serviceability is affected.

Repair – Treat corrosion, restore damaged concrete and address defective bearings where required.

Monitor – Continue periodic inspections to ensure deterioration does not return or progress.

⚠️ The lesson is simple:
A worn-out bridge component should never be normalised simply because the bridge is still standing.

Maintenance is not an expense to postpone—it is an investment in public safety, structural durability and uninterrupted connectivity.

What you’re seeing is SUBGRADE PREPARATION — the foundation of a durable pavement structure. Before asphalt ever reaches the surface, the ground beneath must be engineered correctly.

🔹 1. EARTHWORKS & GRADING
The natural ground is cut, filled, shaped and graded to the required formation level and crossfall, ensuring proper drainage and preventing water from ponding on the pavement.

🔹 2. MOISTURE CONTROL & COMPACTION
The selected material is moisture-conditioned and compacted in controlled layers to achieve the specified density. Field Density Tests are then used to verify the achieved compaction against the laboratory Proctor reference.

🔹 3. DRAINAGE & WATER CONTROL
Water is one of the biggest threats to pavement performance. Proper crossfall, side drains and drainage structures help keep water away from the pavement layers.

🔹 4. FOUNDATION FOR THE PAVEMENT
Once the formation is approved, the pavement structure can proceed — sub-base → base course → prime coat → asphalt concrete.

❌ Poor subgrade preparation = settlement, deformation and premature potholes.
✅ Proper preparation = stability, durability and better pavement performance.
