IEOx Essay Challenge 2026/27: Annual Theme

For the first time, the IEOx Essay Challenge will feature an annual theme in 2026/27, inviting participants to explore a specific area of economics in greater depth.

The theme of this year’s Essay Challenge is Climate Economics, marking the 30th anniversary of the Kyoto Protocol.

Contestants are invited to explore economic questions related to climate action, from carbon markets and sustainable finance to environmental policy and other approaches to addressing climate change.

Kyoto Protocol 30th Anniversary Special Award
The top 40 papers will be selected as finalists. From this shortlist, 5 papers will receive the special award and be featured during a dedicated online seminar.
