I wrote this book to capture my mom’s journey surviving the in Cambodia and to commemorate our family’s small business journey when we owned in Santa Monica from 1981 - 2021 — 40 years of sugar, sweat, and tears as my family’s way of making it in America.
I remember having nightmares of working at the bakery at a young age and pushing myself to get a good education just to NOT go back to work at the bakery, having worked there since I was age 6. But I decided to come back to the family business after finishing my college degree and I reflect on how those were the best years in my life to learn discipline, hard work, and strategy. The next ten years I transformed my family’s business to compete in a modern world through social media, marketing, client relations, partnerships, and so much more.
I’ve had multiple people share with me recently on how proud they are of the impact I made on the an entire donut industry, but what I did as a pioneer and representation for Cambodian Americans to be placed on the map for our contribution to the donut game with .
On my author journey, I’ve realized I know a lot more than I think about business, and how I, a daughter of a refugee, can gift the world my perspective and knowledge through storytelling. I’m feeling inspired to know how proud my ancestors are of my impact on the world thus far, and what I’ve got up my sleeves next!
