TEA PLUCKING TERMINOLOGY
Tea plucking is the most important activity in tea cultivation.
The quality of tea mainly depends on the standard of plucking. Because of this, several special terms are used in the tea industry to describe the type of leaves, growth of the shoot and the plucking method. These terms help supervisors, field officers and tea pluckers to maintain the correct plucking standard in estates.
Bud
The bud is the young unopened shoot at the tip of the tea plant. It is very tender and contains high quality compounds that produce good tea.
Two leaves and a bud
This is considered the ideal plucking standard. The bud together with the first two young leaves is plucked. This standard produces high quality tea and is commonly practiced in tea estates in Sri Lanka.
Fine plucking
Fine plucking means plucking only the tender shoots such as the bud and two leaves. It helps to maintain very good tea quality but it requires careful work from the pluckers.
Medium plucking
Medium plucking includes the bud and three leaves. This method increases the quantity of green leaf but the tea quality is slightly lower compared to fine plucking.
Coarse plucking
Coarse plucking includes older and harder leaves. This happens when shoots are left for a longer period before plucking. It increases leaf weight but reduces tea quality.
Fish leaf
The fish leaf is the small leaf that appears just below the bud. It is usually smaller and shaped like a fish. It indicates the start of a new shoot.
Banji shoot
A banji shoot is a dormant shoot that stops growing for a period of time. These shoots do not produce good leaves for plucking.
Mother leaf
The mother leaf is the leaf that remains on the bush after plucking. It helps the plant continue photosynthesis and supports the growth of new shoots.
Plucking round
The plucking round refers to the number of days between two plucking cycles in the same field. In many tea estates the plucking round is about seven to ten days depending on weather and growth conditions.
Green leaf
Green leaf refers to the fresh tea leaves that are plucked and sent to the factory for processing.
These terms are widely used in tea plantations to maintain quality standards and ensure proper management of tea bushes.
