Textile buttons. An offshoot of Sefrous tailoring craft that is so predominant in Morocco and Sefrou, thanks to the Jews and the craft of tailoring.
These tiny, hand woven buttons that adorn traditional Moroccan Kaftans and Djelabas represent so much culture and socio-politics. Made by women all over Morocco but more so in Sefrou and the region than anywhere. They say that every Sefrouian girl knows how to create a button. Its a cottage industry and way for girls/women to earn a side income whilst still doing domestic duties or studies.
The thing that sits uncomfortably, is that there are no unions, and so this popular and important accessory never increases in price. Made for a pittance. There are too many makers-in-need in the market and not enough systematized cooperatives for the button makers alone. The diaspora is too dispersed with no communication system.
Moroccan Kaftans and djelabas are prized all over the United Arab Emirates and North African region, and as Morocco is one of the cheaper labors of the Arab world, Sefrouian buttons are exported as far and wide as Saudi. You can rest assured not sold for the 4 dh a bunch they are made for. On one Kaftan there are an average of 200 hand woven buttons.
The pride is that it marks Sefrou and is a means to independent income for many a house bound woman.
70% of Moroccan women are the bread winners in families today. That statistic we have seen evidence of in many medina women who are entrepreneurs and self taught go-getters.
Bravo! the button makers and bravo those many women who go out and reap the metaphorical harvests.
