When we admire the splendour of a Maltese feast, we rarely see the craftsmanship behind it. These pedestal structures, created for the Feast of St Dominic in Birgu (always the last weekend of August), begin as beautifully crafted wooden forms. Skilled artists then use traditional painting techniques to transform them into what appears to be richly coloured marble.
A reminder that some of Malta’s most fascinating cultural heritage lies not only in the celebrations themselves, but also in the remarkable talent that brings them to life.
