Today ORCA met with the Malta Ranger Unit to discuss their role in safeguarding outdoor recreation after having some concerns raised by our members about the growing restrictions on the island. 🥾
After a long discussion it feels like we are, for the most part, on the same page. The ranger unit aims to strike a harmonious balance between people enjoying nature, and allowing biodiversity to thrive. As always, ORCA will push for the freedom for all to use our limited public spaces, but at the same time do our best to educate the public on how to enjoy nature sensibly.🌲 This doesn’t mean restricting what we can do, but maybe rethinking the way we do things.
They clarified that they are NOT opposed to camping, aside from within a select few protected areas including Il-Majjistral Nature and History Park. ⛺️ They are actually working with stakeholders to make more sensible camping laws locally! They are NOT against open fires, as long as these are done in a way that safeguards nature. 🔥
Finally we clarified the role of the ranger. They are not a governmental entity, they do not have the right to give out citations. Their aim is to educate the public about responsible use of the outdoors, and be on the lookout for any severe infractions such as illegal dumping, dangerous fires, or destruction of flora and fauna. 🌺
