This Sunday 11 October, the hamlet of Santa Luċija lights up for its now traditional Fjakkolata 🔥

From 6pm, torches are lit across the fields around the hamlet, and the paths and wayside niches glow against the evening sky. Santa Luċija is a small rural hamlet near Kerċem, and on an evening like this the whole area takes on a very different character from the one you see during the day.

The evening continues with folk music, traditional dance and local food, and it is a good opportunity to experience a quieter side of Gozitan village life, away from the busier coastal resorts.

Razzett Tuta is a traditional farmhouse in Ta' Kerċem, and one of our homes that suits the cooler months particularly well 🔥

The house has three bedrooms, two doubles and a twin, and sleeps up to seven guests, with two bathrooms and a separate guest toilet.

The living area is arranged around a fireplace, and as colder days are approaching guests can order wood logs for it, which makes the house a comfortable base for an autumn or winter stay. The bedrooms have their own heating and cooling, while the ground floor, with its high ceilings, stays naturally cool in warmer weather.

Outside there is a private pool, garden furniture and a barbecue. Pets are welcome on request.

Ta' Kerċem is a short drive from both Victoria and Xlendi, and the hamlet of Santa Luċija, which hosts the Fjakkolata this Sunday, is close by.

Dwejra, on Gozo's west coast, is one of the island's best known places to dive 🌊

Divers come here for the waters around Fungus Rock, the Inland Sea and the Blue Hole, where visibility is often excellent and the underwater landscape of arches, caves and steep walls is unlike anything else around the island. Diving in Gozo continues all year, and autumn is a popular time, with the sea still warm and the summer crowds gone.

But Dwejra is just as rewarding above the water. Now that the heat has eased, the paths around Dwejra Tower, built in 1652, and along the surrounding clifftops are far more comfortable to explore, and October marks the start of the walking season in Gozo. The ground is rocky and uneven in places, so good walking shoes are worth bringing🚶‍♂️

Five bedrooms, a private pool and Ramla Bay less than two kilometres away 🏡

Sulda Brill is a country house in the countryside around Nadur, on the eastern side of Gozo, and one of our larger homes for families and groups. It sleeps up to 11 guests across five bedrooms, three doubles and two twins, and has five bathrooms.

Outside, the private pool is surrounded by garden, with a charcoal barbecue for long evenings outdoors. Indoors there is a fully equipped kitchen, a fireplace and central heating, which makes the house just as comfortable later in the year as it is in summer.

Nadur's village centre, with its restaurants and bars, is 800 metres away. Pets are welcome on request.

This is the moment the holiday really begins ☀️

The early morning ferry turns into Mġarr Harbour, the engines slow, and the Lourdes chapel and the spire of Għajnsielem's parish church appear above the boats, catching the first light of the day. After the airport and the drive across Malta, this view is usually the point where the pace of the trip changes.

Gozo is small enough that most of the island is within half an hour's drive of the harbour. Whether you are staying in the countryside around Għarb or close to the sea in Marsalforn or Xlendi, you will not be travelling far once you step off the ferry.

Early October is still very much swimming weather in Xlendi 🌊

The sea around Gozo holds on to its summer warmth well into the autumn, and with the busiest weeks of the year now behind us, the bay is noticeably quieter than it was in August. Xlendi sits at the end of a deep valley on the south west of the island, sheltered by high cliffs on both sides, which keeps the water clear and calm on most days.

It is a good spot for a morning swim, followed by a long lunch at one of the restaurants along the promenade. Later in the afternoon, a stroll around the edge of the bay is a pleasant way to finish the day, as the light softens over the cliffs and the sun begins to set ☀️

Tucked away at Dwejra, the Inland Sea is one of Gozo’s most fascinating natural spots 🌊

This small lagoon is connected to the open Mediterranean through a narrow tunnel running through the surrounding cliffs. When sea conditions allow, little boats take visitors through the tunnel and out along Dwejra’s spectacular coastline 🚤

Definitely an experience to add to your list when exploring this beautiful part of Gozo 😊
