The Feast of Our Lady of Victories in Malta
Celebrated annually on 8 September, the Feast of Our Lady of Victories—known locally as Il-Festa tal-Vitorja or Il-Bambina—is one of Malta’s most meaningful religious and national celebrations.
The feast commemorates the birth of the Virgin Mary while also recalling three important victories in Maltese history: the end of the Great Siege of 1565, the surrender of French forces in 1800, and Italy’s armistice during the Second World War in 1943.
A Celebration of Faith and History
Devotion to Our Lady of Victories is deeply rooted in Maltese culture. The feast is especially celebrated in Senglea, Naxxar, Mellieħa and Xagħra in Gozo, where churches, streets and village squares are beautifully decorated for the occasion.
The celebrations usually include solemn Masses, religious processions, traditional band marches, street decorations and spectacular fireworks. During the procession, the statue of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is carried through the streets while residents and visitors gather to pay tribute.
Victory Day
The day is also recognised as Victory Day, a national holiday in Malta. Official ceremonies are held to honour the courage and resilience of the Maltese people throughout history.
One of the day’s most anticipated traditions is the Victory Day Regatta in the Grand Harbour. Colourful rowing boats representing different harbour communities compete against one another, creating an exciting spectacle that attracts large crowds.
A Unique Maltese Experience
The Feast of Our Lady of Victories brings together religion, history and community spirit. From the glow of illuminated churches to the sound of brass bands and fireworks, the celebrations offer visitors an authentic glimpse into Malta’s rich cultural identity.
Whether experienced in a lively village square, beside the Grand Harbour or in the peaceful surroundings of a beautifully decorated church, the feast is a powerful reminder of Malta’s devotion, perseverance and national pride.
