This is the result of a bad installation of a roof water tank (tinaco). This is not a DIY job and do not hire a contractor, that cannot follow basic instructions for proper installation.
This tank was holding almost 1,000 litres, (almost one tonne) of water. and it is lucky there was no one hurt or other damage to the roof structure.
Calling your local home inspector, would have helped avoid this situation, by providing a professional opinion on the overall installation.

This is an interesting solution for a roof leak. As you see in the following photos the concrete ceiling is leaking and from the white stains, you can see that it has leaked many times before.

However, under "budget" concerns, the roof was not repaired but the leak fixed.

This "ingenius" solution used a funnel tied with wire to an adjacent electrical conduit and finally the end (exit) of the funnel inserted into a hole, cut into the top of a PVC drain pipe.

Well they did use a building adhesive to help "seal" the square hole where they inserted the round tube of the funnel.

The latest news in this one is another leak was discovered and the apartment cannot be rented again.

Reminds me of the story of the little Dutch boy saving the village by putting his finger in the d**e.

A nice article of a great soul that I am pleased to call a friend in my life's journey. Robert, although one of the few that were actually taller than me, his height did not match the grandeur of his spirit of giving. Rest in Peace my friend.
