Sargassum has become one of the biggest environmental and tourism challenges facing the Caribbean and Mexico’s Caribbean coast. While the issue affects destinations throughout the region, not all countries have the same capacity to respond.

Mexico has a significant advantage: a large, diversified economy and a strong national interest in protecting the Riviera Maya, one of the country’s most important tourism regions. Tourism contributes roughly 8–9% of Mexico’s GDP, creating a powerful incentive for long-term investment in sargassum management.

In recent years, Mexico has expanded efforts that include offshore containment barriers, specialized collection vessels, beach-cleaning operations, and ongoing research into sustainable solutions. The government is also investing in larger commercial-scale collection vessels designed to intercept and remove significant quantities of sargassum before it reaches the shoreline. These initiatives represent a level of investment that many smaller Caribbean island nations simply cannot match.

Sargassum is not a problem that will disappear overnight, but the conversation should focus not only on the challenge itself, but also on the strategies being developed to address it. Mexico’s response may offer valuable lessons for coastal destinations throughout the region as they adapt to what is increasingly becoming a long-term reality.

What do you think is the most effective long-term approach: offshore collection and containment, beach cleanup, commercial reuse of sargassum, or an integrated strategy combining all three?

If you liked my cenotes post from yesterday, here are two more places I recommend checking out 💙

Both are a little different from the classic cenote stops, but absolutely worth adding to your list if you’re exploring the Riviera Maya.

1. Laguna Kaan Luum

A stunning turquoise lagoon near Tulum with a deep cenote in the center. The water is calm, shallow, and perfect for floating, relaxing, and taking photos. The contrast in colors is unreal in person.

2. Vesica Tulum

A more curated cenote experience with loungers, food, drinks, music, and a relaxed social vibe. It’s less “wild nature” and more of a comfortable, stylish day out with beautiful surroundings.

Both are great options depending on the kind of day you’re looking for, relaxed nature or something a bit more elevated and social.

Post your favorite cenote or lagoon photo in the comments. I’d love to see your hidden gems and favorite spots around the Riviera Maya. 😀☀

Summer is here in the Riviera Maya, which is my favorite time to visit some of the hundreds of cenotes in the region! Here are my favorites:

1. Cenote Jardín del Edén

My number one for a classic Riviera Maya cenote day. It is big, open, very beautiful, easy to swim in, great for snorkeling, and located between Puerto Aventuras and Akumal. It feels natural without being overly commercial. You’ll need a car or a taxi to reach it. Closed on Saturdays.
Best for: swimming, snorkeling, families, cliff jumps, photos, relaxed half-day visit.

2. Cenote Azul

Easy, pretty, accessible, and great for mixed groups. It has shallow areas, clear water, little fish, and is very beginner-friendly. It can get pretty busy at weekends as its close to the highway.
Best for: families, children, casual swimmers.

3. Cenote Cristalino

Close to Eden and Azul, but a little more adventurous. It has clear water, platforms, rocky edges, and small cave-like sections.
Best for: people who want something slightly more exciting without doing a full cave cenote.

4. Dos Ojos

This is the most “wow” cenote experience on the list. Feels much more like a cenote cave than the open ones. It is more expensive and more touristic, but it is famous for a reason. The water clarity, cave formations, and snorkeling experience are excellent.
Best for: first-timers who want a dramatic cenote, snorkeling tours, and diving. Car recommended.

5. Taak Bi Ha

A beautiful enclosed cave cenote near Dos Ojos. It feels atmospheric, quiet, and magical.
Best for: cave-cenote lovers, moody photos, couples, people who want something more special.

What’s your favorite cenote in the Riviera Maya? 💙

🌴Why People Who Live in the Riviera Maya Full-Time Often Love the Low Season☀

One thing many visitors don’t realize is that full-time residents in the Riviera Maya often love the low season.

Why?

Because life slows down in the best possible way.

• less traffic
• quieter beaches
• easier restaurant reservations
• more space everywhere
• and a much more local feel overall

The pace becomes calmer, more relaxed, and more connected to everyday life here, instead of just tourism.

Yes, it’s warmer.
Yes, there can be more rain and humidity.

But many people living here full-time actually enjoy this part of the year because the Riviera Maya starts feeling less like a vacation destination… and more like home.

It’s also when many residents reconnect with why they chose this lifestyle in the first place.

📉 PRICE ADJUSTMENTS 6 OPPORTUNITIES IN THE RIVIERA MAYA 🌴

We’re seeing a noticeable shift in the market right now, with slower conditions leading some sellers to become more flexible on pricing. For buyers, this is creating a short-term window to secure properties at values we haven’t seen in quite some time, particularly for cash-ready purchasers.

If you’ve been waiting for the right moment, this may be it.

Here are 6 properties with recent price reductions 👇
