Summer is here in the Riviera Maya, which is my favorite time to visit some of the hundreds of cenotes in the region! Here are my favorites:
1. Cenote Jardín del Edén
My number one for a classic Riviera Maya cenote day. It is big, open, very beautiful, easy to swim in, great for snorkeling, and located between Puerto Aventuras and Akumal. It feels natural without being overly commercial. You’ll need a car or a taxi to reach it. Closed on Saturdays.
Best for: swimming, snorkeling, families, cliff jumps, photos, relaxed half-day visit.
2. Cenote Azul
Easy, pretty, accessible, and great for mixed groups. It has shallow areas, clear water, little fish, and is very beginner-friendly. It can get pretty busy at weekends as its close to the highway.
Best for: families, children, casual swimmers.
3. Cenote Cristalino
Close to Eden and Azul, but a little more adventurous. It has clear water, platforms, rocky edges, and small cave-like sections.
Best for: people who want something slightly more exciting without doing a full cave cenote.
4. Dos Ojos
This is the most “wow” cenote experience on the list. Feels much more like a cenote cave than the open ones. It is more expensive and more touristic, but it is famous for a reason. The water clarity, cave formations, and snorkeling experience are excellent.
Best for: first-timers who want a dramatic cenote, snorkeling tours, and diving. Car recommended.
5. Taak Bi Ha
A beautiful enclosed cave cenote near Dos Ojos. It feels atmospheric, quiet, and magical.
Best for: cave-cenote lovers, moody photos, couples, people who want something more special.
