Before I was a consultant, I was the first phone call someone got on their worst day. 📞
I'm an accountant by training, with 40 years in finance and 25 years helping foreigners settle in Mexico. But there's a chapter of my life that shaped how I do this work more than any finance course ever did.
For several years, I volunteered with the American Consulate in Cozumel — later also supporting the Canadian Consulate and, more recently, the Belize Consulate — helping foreign visitors through the hardest situations imaginable: arrests, accidents, serious illness, and sometimes death. I served as the primary point of contact between that individual (or their family) and their consulate, coordinating care, the repatriation of remains, and communication with relatives. I also handled cases involving deaths aboard cruise ships and helped establish the maritime link between San Pedro, Belize, and Chetumal.
Around that same time, running subaquatic tourism operations took me along the Pacific coast and through many of Mexico's tourist destinations — well beyond the Yucatán Peninsula. Between the maritime, aviation, hotel, and restaurant sectors, I ended up with a genuinely wide view of this country's tourism landscape. I also served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism of Mahahual, Quintana Roo, and president of the Rotary Club of Cozumel.
I don't share this for sympathy or credentials — I share it because it's why I now think the way I do about advising foreigners in Mexico: plan for what could go wrong before it happens, and know the country well enough to guide someone honestly, wherever in Mexico they're looking.
