🚨 SCREWWORM UPDATE: SANTA TERESA IS SET TO REOPEN! 🇺🇸🇲🇽

After more than a year of disrupted livestock trade, the Santa Teresa, New Mexico, livestock crossing is scheduled to reopen on September 24, 2026.

Here’s what cattle producers, ranchers, and horse owners need to know. 👇

🐂 CATTLE IMPORTS: Santa Teresa is expected to become the second U.S. crossing to resume cattle imports from Mexico, following the reopening of Douglas, Arizona, on August 24.

🪰 SCREWWORM PREVENTION: USDA is using a phased reopening strategy with inspections, biosecurity protocols, surveillance, and sterile fly releases. Reopening remains dependent on animal health conditions.

🐎 WHAT ABOUT HORSES? USDA previously identified Santa Teresa and Columbus as potential crossings for horses, cattle, and bison. However, a confirmed reopening date specifically for equine imports has not been established.

⚠️ IMPORTANT NEW DEVELOPMENT: On September 17, a New World screwworm case was confirmed in a horse in Grant County, New Mexico. Officials are investigating, and it remains unclear whether this will affect the Santa Teresa reopening timeline.

For those of us with horses waiting to cross from Mexico into the United States, this is progress, but we still need official confirmation on equine imports.

The goal is to restore livestock movement while protecting our animals and the agricultural industry.

We finally have movement at the U.S.–Mexico livestock border — but horses are still waiting. 🇺🇸 🇲🇽

Here’s where things currently stand 👇

🐄 Cattle imports have started to resume. USDA reopened the Douglas, Arizona port on August 24 for cattle coming from Mexico under a new screwworm inspection and treatment protocol.

🐴 Horses are not included in that reopening yet. USDA says it will evaluate the Douglas reopening before considering Santa Teresa and Columbus, New Mexico for cattle, bison AND horses.

🩺 When horse movement resumes, enhanced safeguards will apply. USDA currently requires horses imported from Mexico, or traveling through screwworm-affected areas, to meet additional health requirements and undergo a minimum 7-day quarantine at an APHIS-approved facility.

🪰 Why all the extra precautions? New World screwworm larvae infest living tissue and can affect livestock, wildlife, pets and, rarely, people. USDA continues surveillance and sterile-fly control efforts as the situation evolves.

📍 So for those of us waiting to move horses between Mexico and the United States: progress is happening, but equine land entry has not reopened yet.
