September in Loreto feels different from August. The town begins its slow, beautiful exhale into fall.

The expats who scattered for summer trips start to return. Restaurants fill back up. Coffee shops get their regulars back. Loreto settles into its best rhythm.

If you're watching from a distance and wondering what September here feels like: this is it. The return. The reminder of why people stay.

What does September look like where you are?

Most Mexican food is corn tortillas. In Loreto, it's flour.

The dry climate here favored wheat, not corn, something Spanish missionaries discovered back in the 1600s. That one detail is still shaping daily life today, from rancho breakfasts to the w**e, cheese, and dates first brought here over 300 years ago.

We want to end August with a question for the Loreto community.

If you made the move with your animals, what do you wish you had known before you started? And how are your pets doing now?

We ask because many people considering Loreto have this question. Your answers, the parts that were harder than expected, the parts that turned out to be no big deal, and what your dog or cat is up to now, are exactly what they need to hear.

Drop it in the comments. Bonus points for a photo of your Loreto pet living their best life.

What about hurricane season? It is a common question we get from people seriously considering Loreto. The answer involves Loreto's geography. The Sierra de la Giganta. The Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula. And what long-term residents actually experience versus what people fear from the outside.

We just published a blog post looking at what hurricane season actually means for Loreto residents. If this question has been on your mind, this one is for you: https://www.liveinloreto.com/post/loreto-hurricane-season

National Relaxation Day is this Saturday, August 15. 🌊

If you already know what real relaxation feels like, you know it usually involves the Sea of Cortez, a little sunshine, and nowhere to be. Loreto has a way of resetting people. Slower mornings. Warm water. A pace of life that doesn't ask you to rush.

This weekend, wherever you are, take a page from Loreto living. Slow down. Look at the water, even if it's just in your mind. 🌅

What does relaxation look like for you?

🦈 Whale shark season is here! The whale shark is the biggest fish in the ocean. Up to 40 feet long. As heavy as 20 tons.

They're completely harmless. They eat only plankton, small fish, and krill, just cruising along slowly with those huge mouths open. Swimming next to one feels like floating beside a school bus that decided to be gentle. They show up around Loreto from June through November. July and August are prime time.

If swimming with a whale shark has been on your bucket list, this is where it happens. 🌊 Have you had a whale shark encounter here?

📦 Moving to Loreto means packing smart, and smart usually means less than you think. Our new guide covers what to bring (quality tools, your car, gear you love), what to leave (most of the furniture, most of the clothes, most of the stuff), and what to leave behind mentally: rigid timelines, the idea that more stuff means more comfort, the need to have it all figured out first.

The residents who thrive here let Loreto teach them. This guide is for the ones ready to let it be different. 🌞

If you're in Loreto, or dreaming about it, Baja Adventures is worth carving out time for. They've been running small-group, regenerative tourism expeditions here since 2016, led by Leopoldo Sanmiguel and Regina Domingo, Loreto-based guides with 15+ years in ecotourism. Whale watching, snorkeling, island hikes, and marine trips that actually feed real citizen-science data into conservation research. It's the kind of thing that makes this place special.

Give their page a follow, or learn more on their website below, if you're ready to plan a trip. 🐬

Cabo usually gets all the attention. And honestly? It deserves it. But it's not for everyone. If you want calm water you can actually swim in, a community where people know your name, and waterfront property at a price that doesn't require you to hold your breath, Loreto might be your real answer.

We just wrote a full comparison on the blog. No sales pitch. Just the real differences so you can decide.
