🎨 A major new international contemporary art festival is coming to Mérida — and it could transform the city’s cultural landscape for years to come.
Last week on What’s Happening Yucatán with Stephanie Carmon, I sat down with art curator Daniela Pérez and one of the world’s most important collectors of Latin American art, art collector, patron, and Proyecto Y co-founder Catherine Petitgas to discuss the upcoming Bienal de Yucatán, which will take place from the opening weekend 26th of November 2026 through closing weekend the 28th of February 2027.
The Bienal will bring together approximately 75 contemporary artists from Mexico and around the world, along with exhibitions, installations, public art, performances, and cultural programming spread throughout Mérida’s historic center, Parque La Plancha, Museo de la Luz, Centro Cultural Olimpo, Casa Museo Montes Molina, and other venues across the city.
Among the internationally recognized artists connected to the project are names such as
•Yoko Ono
•Patti Smith
•Cecilia Vicuña and several others alongside emerging artists and important voices from Mexico and beyond.
What excites me most is that this isn’t just about bringing international art to Yucatán. It’s about creating opportunities for local artists, galleries, museums, and cultural spaces while positioning Mérida as one of the most exciting cultural destinations in Latin America.
Imagine spending three months wandering exhibitions, discovering public art installations, attending talks, performances, openings, and cultural events throughout the city.
If all goes as planned, the Bienal de Yucatán may become one of the most important contemporary art events in Mexico — and a defining moment in Mérida’s cultural history.
Honestly, after hearing Daniela and Catherine speak about the vision behind this project, it feels like something very special is about to happen.
