Every Sunday in Playa del Carmen, they close down several blocks in the new downtown area and set up an incredible flea market. Fresh local produce, $1.50 tacos, seafood straight from the fishermen, used furniture, plants, clothes — and it runs from 6 AM to 6 PM. This is how locals live here.
I picked up 50 golf balls for 200 pesos ($11), ate birria tacos for 30 pesos ($1.50), and walked through 4 blocks of the most authentic Mexican market experience you'll find.
Here's what you'll find any given Sunday:
🍅 Fresh local produce — pineapple, corn, squash, yuca, plantains, homegrown eggs, black beans, cactus. All locally grown, all incredibly affordable.
🐟 Fresh seafood — laid out that morning by the fishermen. Tilapia, grouper, red snapper (huachinango — incredible for ceviche).
🌮 Street food that'll ruin every restaurant for you — birria tacos, cecina tacos ($1.50), carnitas, barbacoa, stuffed chili peppers, pozole, menudo. The salsa bars alone are worth the trip.
🌿 Plants, clothes, tools, bed sheets, used furniture, handbuilt carpentry, kids' toys. Every street has a different theme.
🍹 Fresh aguas — lemon, tamarindo, coconut cream. Fifty cents gets you a bathroom.
