Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads and Caregivers. Here are my parents in our canoe we had on the San Blas Islands. Jim and Michele Herling. Super adventurous people who loved art, culture and people... taking us kids everywhere in the world with them. This photo likely early 70's and they look so over baked in the sun and happy. My Dad was a great storyteller and always had a smile for everyone. He worked on the Univac 2 computer after he got out of the Airforce. Very intelligent and always thinking about what the world would be like in the future. Very much like the lead man in the Mad Man series. Full of ideas and charm. He was always proud of a Promotional film he did in marketing at IBM where punch cards would roll around making artistic designs. Think Charles and Ray Eames and Alexander Girard. If he was not testing a computer he would be hanging out in the Braniff Club digging thought Flight reservation books (how it use to be) looking for the best deal to fly around the world. He gave me the Pan Am World book and for years kept asking where do you want to go now? He got us tickets to the Moon and I believed we would go. Everything in our lives was a big adventure. Parties all the time, birthdays, halloween, christmas... over the top...No money but huge dreams. It was the crazy 60's/70's and my parents were hippies in business suits, living the high life, having an international art gallery. It was normal with me to be with them all day. To them school was not that important. It's was how you thought, looked at things and ideas, that was important. Ci******es, cocktails and hard living caught up with them and they both died young in their early 60s.. But left us with tremendous memories of how creative they were and of the world they wanted to experience.
