We should all stand with CDL against this corruption and injustice!

Comunicado oficial. (English under Spanish)

Official Statement

La Cañada de la Virgen wishes to issue the following statement to clarify and bring to light the events of the past few days:

La Cañada de la Virgen has been a working ranch since Mrs. Regina acquired it, actively participating in fundraising, donating land for research, supporting INAH (National Institute of Anthropology and History) personnel, etc.

Now, the ranch is dedicated to environmental conservation, organic meat production, mezcal production, and other products, which support several families living around the ranch.

A few months ago, a delegation from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), accompanied by armed members of the National Guard, appeared again (as they had already attempted during the previous presidential administration) to announce that, by presidential decree, 700 hectares of the Cañada de la Virgen Ranch (CDLV) would be expropriated. They claimed the land would be given directly to Indigenous communities and that various excavations and studies of other components of the Archaeological Zone would be carried out. This was done without consulting lawyers or the landowners; they relied solely on the use of force and posted signs and notices announcing the supposed expropriation, which, of course, is false and illegal. ALL OF THIS HAS BEEN DONE FROM THE BEGINNING WITHOUT ANY LEGAL PROCESS, without court orders, signatures, evaluations, or payments of any kind.

Over the months, clashes have erupted between residents of the local Indigenous communities (the true heirs of the Zone) and law enforcement, as they have yet to demonstrate that the expropriation is genuine and that the entire process is being carried out legally. However, the archaeological zone remains closed because the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) has not reached an agreement with the landowners, who, it should be noted, acquired the property legally and with their own funds. Since the land was donated to INAH, public access to the pyramids has never been denied, in accordance with the rules established by INAH itself.

After several legal battles, CDLV now has an injunction granted by the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation. On May 16th, a heavily armed group from the National Guard, along with INAH (National Institute of Anthropology and History) personnel and Guanajuato state government officials, entered the property, breaking the locks that delimit the entrance. They ignored the sign that reads "Private Property" and disregarded the laws that this entails.

Ignoring this, they began making moves. Over the days, they have been bringing in materials to fence off and delimit an area they cannot legally delimit, since we have an injunction granted by the same Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation. They have intimidated and harmed ranch employees, depriving them of communication and their property, seriously injuring two of them. The INAH personnel, who worked with and assisted them previously, did nothing to help them. They have been breaking fences and allowing cattle to leave their pastures, without regard for the damage to the property. National Guard personnel demanded to speak with the ranch owner and allowed the employees to go and warn her. They threatened that if the owners refused to speak with them, they would forcibly enter the ranch and take her and her family.

Plainclothes, armed personnel continue to threaten the residents. The San Miguel de Allende Prosecutor's Office has been investigating individuals who want to enter CDLV to work or even to return to their homes in the communities within CDLV.

We are in a war zone, all because of the greed of some powerful people who want to build hotels and luxury homes in a protected area. We have lost the peace and harmony that we have spent so many years building on a ranch where we have the opportunity to admire the pyramids and also work in our business, which provides a livelihood for many families in San Miguel.

They are prohibiting our right to work a ranch that depends on its sales to operate.

The people of CDLV are afraid of what else the government officials are capable of doing to illegally invade our land and take everything we have worked for to provide for our families.

If any state, national, or even international media outlet—since this is an international crime, as some of the landowners are foreigners—wishes to contact the family directly, we will gladly provide more information about this crime against Rancho Cañada de la Virgen and its residents.

If local and national government authorities allow this property theft, it is clear that foreign investment in Mexico is not safe and that both companies and individuals should avoid it.
