SAN MIGUEL FAVORITES | EL PEGASO
Some places become much more than a favorite restaurant.
El Pegaso began in 1982 when Nancy Underwood opened a folk art shop on Calle Corregidora. It later became a clothing store, and Nancy noticed that while the women shopped, their husbands often stood outside waiting. So, she brought in a table and chairs and began serving coffee.
Eventually, her daughter Robin and son-in-law Beto, transformed the shop into the restaurant we know today.
But El Pegaso has a very special place in my heart for another reason.
On my very first evening in San Miguel, nearly 30 years ago, I went there for dinner. It was a chilly, rainy evening, and there was a roaring fire in the fireplace.
Robin and Beto were sitting nearby, and I happened to mention that the weather reminded me of Portland, Oregon, where I'd moved from.
Robin immediately perked up. Her son Aaron was attending school in Portland!
That little conversation was the beginning of a friendship that has lasted nearly three decades. Robin and I became best friends, and over the years we’ve become family.
Today, when I walk into El Pegaso, the waiters, the ladies at the cashier's desk, and many of the regular customers know me by name. Often I'll run into friends, and there's always someone ready with a hug.
And the food? Delicious! I'm particularly fond of their Eggs Benedict, and they make all their own desserts.
El Pegaso is still there at Corregidora 6, just two blocks from the Jardín and directly across from the post office, with its familiar bright red door.
For me, it's one of those places that makes San Miguel feel like home.
And to think, it all began with a rainy evening, a warm fireplace, and a conversation about Portland.

One of the greatest pleasures of my years in San Miguel real estate has been the lasting relationships I've developed with my clients.

Wendy and I have worked together for nearly 25 years, through the purchase and sale of several properties. But more than anything, I'm grateful for the friendship we've shared through the years.

Yesterday was one of those afternoons that reminds me why I love living in San Miguel de Allende.

Just a few steps from my house is Nectar, a wonderful little vegan restaurant where I spent three delightful hours yesterday, sitting in the intimate courtyard, visiting with owners Jim and Alfredo and catching up with friends.

And the food! I had their Chick’n Fried Steak, made with homemade seitan, served with mashed potatoes and cream gravy. Absolutely delicious. For dessert, warm carrot cake topped with cream and strawberries. One of the best meals I've had in ages.

I honestly can't remember the last time I enjoyed an afternoon quite so much. Good conversation, laughter, wonderful food, and absolutely no reason to hurry off anywhere.

After 31 years in San Miguel, it's still these simple pleasures and the friendships I've made along the way that make living here so special.

Some houses catch my attention immediately, and this is one of them.

I particularly love the old stone façade, softened by bougainvillea climbing up the front. There's something so appealing about a house that has acquired its character over generations.

The Face You Know. The Name You'll Remember.

Many people in San Miguel know me by sight, often walking through town with my two black dogs, Zoey and Balto. But what some may not know is that I've been a real estate advisor here for almost 30 years.

Over those years, I've had the pleasure of helping people from around the world buy and sell homes in San Miguel, and introducing newcomers to the people, neighborhoods, and community I've come to know and love.

When I began my real estate career, there were only five agencies in town. I've watched San Miguel evolve in extraordinary ways, and along the way, I've come to know the history behind many of its homes and the changes that have shaped its neighborhoods.
