Who is or what is the Kitchen God ?

As we are preparing for His annual holidays back to Heaven next week, I thought it would be nice to produce a short read of who is The Kitchen God. He goes by the different title as 灶君 (Zhao Khun - in Hokkien / Stove Master) 灶君公 ( Zhao Khun Kong - in Hokkien / Stove Master Lord) found in the text of ancient Taoism from myth or folklore handed down by oral transmission generations over generations.

Here I would like to touch on two aspects of his origins coming from myth and folklore.

On the mythical aspect, He is believed to be the 4th son of Jade Emperor who is a pl***oy and does nothing but womanizing and lazing around. Incurring Jade Emperor's wrath, He was punished from the Heavens and sent down to the Kitchen where He can see women for all eternity and guards the Kitchen all day.

On local folklore side, we must remember most of Taoist deities were once humans who had done good deeds and were honored by the locals folks until their elevation as Deity by Jade Emperor.

One of the famous story ; He was once a mortal man dating around 2nd Century BC by the name Zhang Lang whose marriage was abrupted by an affair He had with a younger woman even though had married a virtuous wife. Seeing His deliberate act, the Heavens punished Him with ill-fortune and became blinded causing his new wife to leave Him and support Himself.

One day upon begging, He chanced upon back to His first virtuous wife. The woman took Him in and after relating His ordeal with full of remorse and wept, the woman asked Him to open His eyes and His sight was restored. Unable to accept what He did, He threw himself into the kitchen hearth not knowing there was fire and got killed. His former wife tried to pull him and all she managed to save was one of His legs.

To honor her late husband, she then created an altar above the kitchen hearth as respect and that was how the creation of Kitchen God came about.

Below you will see the two versions of images of The Kitchen God
