【If you take away the palm sugar, is it still cendol?】
As a JB local with a dangerous appetite for adventure, allow me to lodge a small complaint on behalf of my Penang friends.
This "white coffee cendol" had no soul.
Without the palm sugar, it's just a white coffee dessert with green stuff floating in it. Grass jelly vibes. Nothing more.
The signature cendol wasn't much better — the palm sugar was barely a whisper, the coconut milk had lost that gentle saltiness it's supposed to carry, and the sweetness was flat. One note. No complexity.
That's not how I remember Penang cendol tasting.
The irony? There used to be another cendol stall in the same mall — fragrant palm sugar, perfect sweet-salty balance, proper Nyonya soul.
It's closed now.
My faith in the universe took a small but meaningful hit.
---
Now, someone might ask (it's me, I'm someone):
If pizza gets pineapple and sushi gets mayonnaise, why can't cendol lose the palm sugar?
It can. I just don't think it should.
Because when you try to stand out by removing what makes something real, it usually means you're not sure what actually matters.
People who try too hard to be funny rarely are.
Stephen Chow never tried to be funny. He just fully became his character — and somehow, that's what got you every time.
He knew comedy lives inside tragedy.
So he played the absurdity completely straight.

I spent six years in sales in Taiwan.
Senior reps with impressive numbers tried to teach me the craft — scripts, anchoring, strategic pauses. I absorbed almost none of it. (Grateful. Also sorry.)
Still closed deals though. Numbers were fine, I think.
Two weeks ago, I couldn't have told you why.
Then I announced I was moving back to Malaysia — and clients started to worry. That confused me. Our products were solid, after-sales was professional. What exactly were they afraid of losing?
They told me:
*"The product is one thing. But you always responded, always answered honestly, and you actually seemed to mean it."*
(Verbatim. I didn't embellish.)
That's when it clicked.
I always thought I was running on product quality, industry knowledge, maybe a little luck.
Turns out, my palm sugar was sincerity.

Rich, natural palm sugar. No substitutes.
That's really the only thing I know how to do.
