May 2026 will forever be etched in my heart as the month our dreams came true.
Our firstborn son, Sunil Dev, completed the Order of the Ring Ceremony and graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. As I watched the iron ring being placed on his finger and later saw him walk across the graduation stage with the Malaysian flag proudly displayed on his stole, tears flowed uncontrollably. At that moment, I was not looking at an engineer. I was looking at the little boy I once carried in my arms, the baby whose tiny fingers once held mine, the child I loved, protected, and prayed for every single day. Seeing him stand there as the only Malaysian in his graduating class filled my heart with a pride that words can never fully describe. I felt proud as a mother, proud as a Malaysian, and above all, grateful to God for allowing me to witness this precious moment.
When we sent Sunil to America in 2021, our hearts broke. The world was still recovering from the pandemic, and we could not even accompany him. We watched our child leave home alone, carrying not only his luggage but also our hopes, dreams, and prayers.
Thousands of miles separated us. There were no familiar faces, no family to comfort him, and no mother to hug him when things became difficult. There were days of loneliness, struggles, sacrifices, and financial challenges. There were moments when he felt exhausted and wanted to give up. As parents, nothing hurts more than knowing your child is suffering and being unable to be there beside him. Many nights we cried silently and prayed that God would protect him, guide him, and give him the strength to continue. Yet through every hardship, Sunil never gave up. He worked part time jobs, balanced his studies, overcame challenges, and kept moving forward. He carried himself with courage, determination, and faith.
Then came 30 May 2026...
The moment Sunil walked across that stage, time seemed to stand still. Every sacrifice, every sleepless night, every worry, every prayer, every tear, and every hardship suddenly became worth it. In that single moment, I felt years of struggle turn into overwhelming joy.
