On 22 August 2025, the New Straits Times spotlighted how the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) is gearing up to rival the scale and ambition of China’s Shenzhen SEZ—an iconic example of rapid transformation and prosperity. 

Here’s why this matters for Grand Medini and the wider Iskandar region:

1. A Transformative Vision in Motion
The JS-SEZ is set to span between 3,300 to 3,500 sq km, making it nearly double the size of Shenzhen and about five times larger than Singapore.    

2. Major Economic Ambitions Underway
• A formal agreement was signed in January 2025 between Prime Ministers Anwar Ibrahim (Malaysia) and Lawrence Wong (Singapore), following a MoU in early 2024.    
• The initiative aims to attract 50 major projects and create 20,000 skilled jobs within the first five years, and contribute as much as US $26 billion annually by 2030.     
• It encourages investments across 11 key sectors, including digital economy, healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, tourism, education, green economy, energy, food security, financial services, and business services.  

3. Infrastructure & Connectivity to Benefit All
Projects like the RTS Link (Rapid Transit System)—scheduled to open by December 2026—will dramatically accelerate cross-border movement between Johor and Singapore, easing congestion at the Causeway.

Big news for Medini and Iskandar Puteri!

Johor is in early talks with Singapore on a second cross-border rail link (RTS2) connecting Iskandar Puteri directly to Tuas. This comes as momentum builds around the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) and aims to provide a new, faster alternative to the congested Causeway route.

Over 100 global industry players and experts from countries including Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and across ASEAN and Europe will gather at the Nikkei Forum Medini 2025 in Johor Bahru on June 18–19.

Hosted in Johor for the first time, the forum titled “𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚’𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐇𝐮𝐛” aims to explore themes like green energy, smart city development, talent building, and economic integration, particularly within the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).

In addition, this forum will highlighting Johor as a rising role in Southeast Asia's innovation and investment landscape.

The Nikkei Forum Medini 2025 also highlights Johor growing role as a regional innovation hub by bringing together global leaders to discuss key topics like green energy, smart cities, and cross-border collaboration.

The event supports regional development through partnerships and knowledge sharing.

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Johor attracted over RM162.2 billion in investments across 1,761 projects from 2022 to 2024, generating 53,764 direct job opportunities, said State Investment, Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Lee Ting Han.
