VOLTAGE VS AMPERAGE

The difference between voltage (V) and amperage (A) lies in what they measure in an electrical circuit:

Voltage (V) – Electrical Pressure

Voltage is the electrical potential difference between two points.

It is what pushes electric charges through a circuit, similar to water pressure in a pipe.

Measured in volts (V).

Example: A 12V battery provides a 12-volt push to the circuit.

Amperage (A) – Electrical Current

Amperage (or current) is the flow of electric charge in a circuit.

It measures how much electricity is moving, similar to the amount of water flowing in a pipe.

Measured in amperes (A).

Example: A device drawing 2A from a 12V battery is consuming 2 amps of current.

Analogy – Water Pipe System

Voltage = Water Pressure (pushes water through the pipe).

Amps = Water Flow Rate (amount of water moving through the pipe).

How They Work Together

Using Ohm’s Law:

V = I \times R

V = Voltage (Volts)

I = Current (Amps)

R = Resistance (Ohms)

For example, if a circuit has 12V and a resistance of 6Ω, the current would be:

I = \frac{V}{R} = \frac{12V}{6Ω} = 2A

If my 200watt device runs for an how, how much energy has it used up?

If your 200-watt (W) device runs for 1 hour, the energy it uses is calculated as:

Energy (kWh) = Power (kW) × Time (hours)

Since 200W = 0.2kW, and the time is 1 hour:

Energy = 0.2 kW × 1 h = 0.2 kWh

So, your device uses 0.2 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy in 1 hour.

Feel free to make your contributions.

Kw vs kWh

The difference between 1000W (watts) and 1kWh (kilowatt-hour) is about power vs. energy:

1000W (1kW): This is a measure of power, which tells you the rate at which energy is being used at a given moment. For example, a 1000W heater uses 1000 watts of power while it's running.

1kWh (kilowatt-hour): This is a measure of energy, which tells you how much electricity has been used over time. If a 1000W device runs for one hour, it consumes 1kWh of energy.

Example:

If you run a 1000W (1kW) heater for 1 hour, it will use 1kWh of energy.

If you run the same heater for 2 hours, it will use 2kWh of energy.

If you run a 500W (0.5kW) fan for 2 hours, it will also use 1kWh of energy (0.5kW × 2h = 1kWh).

So, 1000W is a power rating, while 1kWh is the total energy used over time.

Can I Connect Batteries of Different Ah Ratings Together? PLEASE READ TO THE END.

Yes, you can connect batteries with different amp-hour (Ah) ratings, but it depends on whether you connect them in series or parallel, and there are important considerations:

1. Connecting in Series (Increases Voltage)

When connecting in series, the total voltage increases while the capacity (Ah) remains that of the smallest battery.

Example: A 12V 10Ah battery in series with a 12V 20Ah battery results in 24V, but the capacity is limited to 10Ah (smallest Ah rating).

NOT RECOMMENDED because the lower Ah battery will discharge faster and may get damaged.

2. Connecting in Parallel (Increases Capacity)

When connecting in parallel, the voltage remains the same, but the capacities (Ah) are added together.

Example: A 12V 10Ah battery in parallel with a 12V 20Ah battery gives 12V 30Ah total.

NOT RECOMMENDED because the batteries will discharge unevenly, leading to imbalances and potential damage over time.

Recommendations:

✅ Use batteries of the same voltage and Ah rating for the best performance.
✅ If you must mix Ah ratings, use a battery balancer or diodes to regulate charge/discharge.
✅ Avoid deep cycling mixed batteries, as one will wear out faster.
✅ If possible, stick to batteries of the same type (e.g., all AGM, LiFePO4, or lead-acid).
