Can I Connect Batteries of Different Ah Ratings Together? PLEASE READ TO THE END.
Yes, you can connect batteries with different amp-hour (Ah) ratings, but it depends on whether you connect them in series or parallel, and there are important considerations:
1. Connecting in Series (Increases Voltage)
When connecting in series, the total voltage increases while the capacity (Ah) remains that of the smallest battery.
Example: A 12V 10Ah battery in series with a 12V 20Ah battery results in 24V, but the capacity is limited to 10Ah (smallest Ah rating).
NOT RECOMMENDED because the lower Ah battery will discharge faster and may get damaged.
2. Connecting in Parallel (Increases Capacity)
When connecting in parallel, the voltage remains the same, but the capacities (Ah) are added together.
Example: A 12V 10Ah battery in parallel with a 12V 20Ah battery gives 12V 30Ah total.
NOT RECOMMENDED because the batteries will discharge unevenly, leading to imbalances and potential damage over time.
Recommendations:
✅ Use batteries of the same voltage and Ah rating for the best performance.
✅ If you must mix Ah ratings, use a battery balancer or diodes to regulate charge/discharge.
✅ Avoid deep cycling mixed batteries, as one will wear out faster.
✅ If possible, stick to batteries of the same type (e.g., all AGM, LiFePO4, or lead-acid).
