THIRTY SAYINGS OF THE WISE
Gleaning from the Book of Proverbs

DAY 1 — THE GATE

At the CLASFON (Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria) Conference 2026 at Calabar , ARCBISHOP EMMAH ISONG spoke about gates.

And one thing stayed with me:
A gate is not merely an entrance. It is a point of access.
It determines what comes in, what stays out, and who or what is permitted to pass through.

Then I came across Proverbs 4:23 again:

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

I then realized that my heart has a gate too.
And not everything deserves access.

Not every voice.
Not every relationship.
Not every opportunity.
Not every desire.
Not every thought.

We are often careful about securing our physical spaces, yet remarkably careless about what we permit into the temple within us.

But what gains access to your heart eventually gains influence over your life.
So perhaps guarding your heart is really an exercise in access control.
Who gets in?
What gets in?
What stays?
And what must be denied entry?

Because wisdom is not only knowing what to pursue.
Almost always, wisdom is knowing what must never be given access to you.

Dear Developer,

Your logo is not your incorporation certificate.

Your Instagram page is not your CAC registration.

And having “Limited” at the end of your name does not magically make you a company.

You can have the office.
The branding.
The agents.
The land.
The marketing.

But my dear Developer… have you actually put the business on a proper legal footing?

Because looking like a company and being one are two different conversations.

Before you sell the dream, make sure the business behind the dream can legally stand.

Because legitimacy is not aesthetics.

It is structure.

And trust me, you want to get this right before there is a problem.

Dear Developer…

What if the biggest risks in real estate aren’t the ones you can see?

They hide in the details we overlook, the processes we postpone, and the responsibilities we take for granted.

Until an oversight becomes a problem.
Until someone pays the price.

This is a conversation about building responsibly.

The decisions behind the transactions.
The people behind the numbers.
The responsibilities behind the buildings.

Because building responsibly is not just about what you build, but how you build it.

For better real estate practices.
For better developments.
For a better industry.

Every child is born somewhere.

Some are born into cities.
Some into villages.
Some into privilege.
Some into obscurity.

But none of us is born without a story.

I was born Gbagyi.

For a long time, I believed becoming a lawyer meant leaving parts of myself behind—that the language, the culture, and the heritage that shaped me belonged quietly in the background.

I was wrong.

The law did not erase where I come from.
It gave me another way to serve it.

So this is more than a walk to the City Gate.

It is a daughter returning to her people with knowledge in her hands, justice in her heart, and heritage on her shoulders.

Because perhaps the highest form of success is this:

To return to where you came from with something worth giving.

Whatever your name is…
Whatever language first taught you to say “mother”…
Whatever soil first carried your footsteps…

Never believe you must abandon your roots to answer your calling.

Carry your heritage with honour.
Carry your purpose with humility.
Carry your people in your heart.

The world doesn’t need fewer people who know where they come from.

It needs more people courageous enough to carry their identity into every room they enter—and compassionate enough to return home with everything they’ve learned.

In service of justice.

And this is only the beginning.

Standing before this mural, I am reminded of the rich history, resilience, and enduring legacy of my people.

Long before Abuja became Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory in 1976, these lands were the ancestral home of indigenous communities, predominantly the Gbagyi people. Our identity, language, culture, and traditions were inseparable from this land. The establishment of the FCT marked a defining chapter in our nation’s history, opening the door to remarkable national growth and development. It also brought profound change to the lives of many indigenous communities through land acquisition and resettlement.

As I reflect on that history, I do so with both pride and deep emotion.
The Gbagyi people have always been known for our humility, hospitality, and peaceful nature. Unfortunately, these qualities are sometimes mistaken for weakness. Yet true strength is often found in the wisdom to pursue peace, even in the face of adversity.

Today, my concern extends beyond what happened decades ago. It is about the choices we make now and the legacy we leave for generations yet unborn.

Compensation for acquired land is both a legal right and an important obligation. However, if our aspirations begin and end with compensation, we risk losing something far more valuable our heritage, our identity, our voice, our influence, and our rightful place in the future of the city that emerged from our ancestral homeland.

Every generation is entrusted with the responsibility of shaping the future. I hope ours will choose to preserve our language, document our history, invest in education, strengthen our institutions, and raise visionary leaders who will ensure that the Gbagyi people are remembered not only as the original custodians of Abuja, but also as active partners in its continued growth and development.

I do not want us to be remembered merely as the people who once owned this land. I want us to be recognized as the people who continue to shape its future with wisdom, excellence, and purpose.

Development should never come at the expense of identity.
Let us preserve our heritage, protect our identity, and secure our place in the story of Abuja and Nigeria.
