Starting small in business is something everybody should take very seriously.

This is not a motivational quote. It’s reality.

If you are meant to fail three times before making headway in business, you will — no matter the age you start and the amount you start with.

Understanding Land Sizes in Nigeria: Acre, Hectare & Square Meter (For First-Time Investors)

One of the biggest confusions I see with first-time land investors in Nigeria is *land size measurement.

Agents will tell you “it’s one plot, two plots, or half an acre” — but if you don’t understand what that really means, you might buy less than you think you’re paying for.

Let’s break it down 👇🏽

🔹 1. Square Meter (sqm)

This is the basic unit of land measurement in Nigeria.

✅️ sqm = a small square that measures 1 meter by 1 meter.

When land documents say “600sqm,” it means the total size is 600 little squares joined together.

✅️Plot:

A “plot” is not an exact universal measurement — it depends on location and local planning regulations.

In most Nigerian cities, a standard residential plot is 450sqm – 600sqm.
👉 In Lagos, some areas use 600sqm as a plot.

👉 In Abuja, many places use 500sqm.

So, when an agent says “one plot,” always ask: “How many square meters?”

👉 In Anambra State, a standard 1 plot measure 465sqm.

✅️Acre:

An acre is bigger than a plot. It is usually used when buying larger portions of land.

1 acre = 4,047sqm (approx).

That is about 6 to 7 plots, depending on the plot size in that area.

So, if someone says “this land is 1 acre,” picture a small football field.

✅️ Hectare:

This is the king size measurement of land in Nigeria.

1 hectare = 10,000sqm.

That’s about 2.5 acres or 15–16 plots.

Big developers and estate projects usually acquire land in *hectares* because it covers more ground.

✨ Practical Example:

Let’s say you want to buy 2 plots of land in Lagos. If the estate developer tells you each plot is 600sqm, then 2 plots = **1,200sqm.**

If your friend buys 1 acre in Ibadan, he owns about **6 plots.**

If a church acquires 1 hectare, that’s enough space for a massive auditorium, car parks, and even staff quarters.

✅️ Bear This in Mind While Buying Land in Nigeria :

📍Always ask for the sqm on the land document, not just “plot.”

📍Know that acre and hectare are usually for bulk purchases.

📍Don’t be afraid to carry a surveyor along — they help verify the true size.

When we talk about property ownership in church, people roll their eyes.

The vanity upon vanity line starts flying.

But pause and look at the Scriptures—owning land is not just about ambition, it is about "obedience" to God’s original instruction in Genesis 1:26–28:

"Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion…"

Now think about it—how do you "subdue" a territory you don’t even own?
How do you exercise "dominion" when you are only a tenant in the land?

Go back to Abraham. God didn’t just promise him children; He promised him LAND (Genesis 12:7).

When Israel came out of Egypt, the promise wasn’t just freedom—it was "a land flowing with milk and honey"

Even Naboth in 1 Kings 21 understood this deeply when he refused to sell his vineyard to Ahab. To him, it wasn’t just “property,” it was "inheritance and legacy."
