Mesopotamia recorded land with tablets and boundary stones.
Romans used the groma for right angles and straight lines.
Domesday Book (1086) surveyed English land for tax.
Gunter’s chain (1620) and Ramsden’s theodolite (1787) advanced tools.
Steel tapes and aerial photography followed in the 19th–20th centuries.
EDM (Geodimeter 1947) enabled electronic distance measurement.
Total stations (1970s) measured angles and distances together.
GPS/RTK (1980s–90s) brought centimetre accuracy.
Today: multi-GNSS, LiDAR, drones, and robotic systems.
