Day before yesterday, Tuesday the 31st of March, 2026 I was invited to *Guts FM 104.9* to discuss and enlighten the public on the causes of the ceaseless dubious characters surrounding the land and property transactions.
Ancorer: We heard different cases of people that bought property but facing serious issues after payment.
* Some bought from estate but when they came back for development or reselling, the estate management company will move them to another plot different from the one they paid for.
* Some bought from family but few months later they discovered that the property has been sold to another person.
* Some bought land and after taken possession government suddenly came around to claim the land.
My responses, Amb. Hon. Otunubi Opeyemi: I will put the blames on the buyers and the government.
1. When you want to purchase a piece of land, you are expected to engage a reliable real estate expert, engage a surveyor and a lawyer. The real estate expert will help you to identify available property, conduct search on the rightful owners, conduct search on the available title documents and search on the status of the land. The surveyor will take the measurement and give report on topographical status of the land while the lawyer is to prepare the Deed of Assignment which is the legal document that will transfer the right owned and enjoyed by the previous owner to you. Unfortunately many of the property buyer's are trying to play smart and boycutting the above listed professionals which at the result cause lost of hard earned money.
Another point is that some property buyers always look for cheaper land without care for any future problem on the land/property. Succinctly, Anybody who needed a problem free land/property have to engage the service of the above listed professionals.
2. The second person I want to blame on this matter is the government for not regulating the profession of real estate experts as expected. The government have alot to do in cubbing the land fraudsters and grabbers by regulating the profession, establish laws that will control the work, giving the common Nigerians hopes in judiciary, create way for the public to get fair judgement within short period of time and of low cost, etc.
Lastly, let the land fraudsters. and grabber be punished accordingly. Alot was discussed but can't all be repeated here.
