The Maid They Called a Thief
When 19-year-old Ada arrived in Lagos to work as a housemaid, she made one promise to herself:
"No matter how hard life gets, I will never steal."
Her employers seemed kind.
They gave her food, a room, and even promised to sponsor her education one day.
For two years, Ada served the family faithfully.
She woke up before everyone else and slept after everyone had gone to bed.
One Saturday morning, everything changed.
Madam's gold necklace disappeared.
The house was searched from top to bottom.
Nothing was found.
Then someone pointed at Ada.
"It has to be the maid."
Without evidence, everyone believed it.
She cried.
She begged.
She swore before God that she was innocent.
No one listened.
The police were called.
She spent three nights in a cell.
When she was released, she had already lost her job, her reputation, and the little dignity she had left.
Back in her village, people whispered whenever she passed.
"That's the girl who stole from her boss."
Unable to find work, Ada started selling roasted corn by the roadside.
She saved every naira.
Years later, she opened a small grocery shop.
The shop became two.
Then five.
Within a decade, Ada owned one of the biggest supermarket chains in her state.
One afternoon, a woman walked into her office asking for financial assistance.
Ada looked up.
It was her former employer.
Time had not been kind to her.
Her husband's business had collapsed.
Their house had been sold.
With tears in her eyes, the woman confessed.
"The necklace was never stolen. My daughter had taken it and hid it because she was afraid I would scold her. We discovered it months later... but I was too ashamed to come and apologize."
Silence filled the office.
The woman fell to her knees.
"Please forgive me."
Ada stood up, helped her to her feet, and smiled.
"I carried your accusation for years. I refuse to carry bitterness for the rest of my life."
She not only forgave her...
She paid the woman's hospital bills and helped her family start a small business again.
As the woman left, she whispered,
"I called you a thief...
But today, you have shown me what true riches look like."
Sometimes the people who destroy your name cannot destroy your destiny.
If you were Ada, would you have helped the woman after everything she did?
