MANY TENANTS DON'T KNOW THIS LIST EXISTS... and that should worry EVERY LAGOS resident. The government published a list in March, 2023, most Lagosians never saw it especially the tenants.

My heartfelt condolences go to the families who lost loved ones and everyone affected by the tragic building collapse at Alakija Bus Stop, Lagos. May God comfort the bereaved, grant quick recovery to the injured, and strengthen everyone involved in the rescue efforts.

This tragedy is a painful reminder that buildings often show warning signs before they fail.
In 2023, the Lagos State Government published a list of 349 Distressed Buildings and directed owners to carry out structural integrity assessments, including Non-Destructive Tests (NDT), with unsafe structures to be repaired or demolished where necessary.

Whether every affected property complied with those directives is a matter for the authorities to investigate. What is clear is that ignoring visible structural defects or delaying professional inspections, can put lives at risk.

If you're a tenant, don't ignore serious cracks, sinking floors, leaning walls, unusual vibrations, or exposed reinforcement. Your safety is more important than your rent.

If you're a landlord or property owner, don't wait until your building becomes tomorrow's headline. Engage qualified structural engineers, carry out integrity tests where necessary, and comply with safety directives.
