Problem no dey finish
Money no fit finish

Not just in Nigeria, there’s problem everywhere. The good thing is, once there’s a problem, there’s money to be made.

Think about it, for every war, new millionaires and billionaires are made through weaponry and arms deals

For every disease, new millionaire doctors and pharmacists

For high housing deficits, new real estate millionaires and billionaires are made

Notice the pattern, on one end there’s chaos, on the other end there’s prosperity.

Am I applauding the chaos? Absolutely NOT!
At the same time, is there something to be learned? Sure!

I learned of the correlation between problems and money in 2017. It has helped me see an opportunity in every problem. That doesn’t mean I intend to capitalize on every problem.

The change in perspective led to identifying the huge gap in the market that made me what I am today. Instead of seeing the massive shutdowns and layoffs as a thing to whine about, I decided to step in and provide a solution no matter how little.

Provided I’m still active today, it can only mean one thing, I did provide a solution to a problem and I’m getting paid for it.

As a business owner, the products you sell provide a solution to your customers. What are those solutions?

The services you render provide a solution to the problems of your clients, what are those solutions?

When you’re able to identify their problems and the unique way your products or services solve these problems, selling becomes easy for you.

Have you ever written a beautiful piece of content you were sure would go viral? Then published said content only to get 2 likes and no comments? How does that feel?

I’ve been there. Not once, nor twice, nor thrice. Probably over 50 times to date.

Before COVID, I started a tech blog sometime in 2017. The goal was to write engaging content that could go viral on tech events, and news, and also review new gadgets. I’ll grow a reasonable amount of audience, and then monetize the blog with AdSense and affiliate links. It should have been easy right?

Wrong! It was more than that. Because, tell me why I’ll write and publish over 10 articles on my blog, share the links across all my social media platforms, and still not have the least 100 readers after the first week. Oh wait, it’s too early to judge right?

How about 3 months later, with over 30 articles, yet less than 1000 people have visited? Is it still early?

Truth be told, I approached blogging with a ‘get rich quick’ mindset. So I focused on getting monetized ASAP rather than getting good at blogging. When I figured this out, everything changed.

I got to understand that to succeed as a blogger, I had to be good at a few things. I had to have a good knowledge of;
Copywriting
SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
Social Media Marketing
Graphics designs
Email marketing and automation
Community building

So I got to work. I spent the better parts of 2017 to 2019 learning about digital marketing. I was no longer in a rush to monetize my blog. I actually sort of abandoned it at this point and immersed myself in learning. This turned out to be the best decision I’ve ever made in my entire life.

If I gift you N500k today, would you take it? What if you had N5,000,000 in your account, would you still take it? Of course you would.

We all need extra cash. The richest men are still making more money. We never seem to get enough of it.

When covid hit, I needed some extra cash. I wasn’t lacking anything basically but I had plans that needed money to materialize.

When the opportunity presented itself, I thought to myself, can I offer my current knowledge and skills as a service?

Here’s the thing. I acquired the knowledge I had at that time pre covid for the purpose of growing and monetizing my blog. But, that wouldn’t happen over night. It’ll take time to manifest.

The unique thing here was, I needed some extra cash, they(the businesses) needed to maximize the online marketplace to keep their stores open and possibly retain their employees.

They had the money I wanted, I had the skills they needed. Why not make a trade. Right?

If only it was that easy.

I had to come to terms with one ugly fact. I knew I would quit halfway into it if I started with the goal of making money alone. So I had to come up with a WHY.

Why did I start a branding and marketing agency? Here’s why;

To help small and medium sized businesses leverage the online marketplace to stay connected with their customers, irrespective of their location.

Since then, I’ve gone ahead to work with clients in various industries, cutting across auto dealerships, e sports, coaching and consulting, real estate, skincare, etc.

4 years later, I’m still helping small, medium and big businesses leverage the online marketplace to stay connected with their customers, irrespective of their location.

To be honest, If I didn’t have a strong WHY, I would have given up a long time ago.

Over to you, what’s your WHY?

21/06/2024

I shouldn’t have started a business. It was never as easy as it was painted to be. I fell for the trap and now I regret it.

Chances are, you reading this have at one point thought about quitting. But I digress.

I have thought about it multiple times. But one thing kept me going. That’s my WHY.

Why I started my branding & marketing agency gives me a sense of purpose. That’s the more reason I always emphasize starting with a solid WHY.

Beyond making money, why did you venture into this business, this skill, this craft, this career, this journey? Why?

I never dreamed of being a marketer. I was just another blogger trying to replicate the Techcrunch story.

Start a tech blog, be consistent, grow it into a reputable dependable media source for tech news and updates in Africa and beyond, sell it for a couple of millions($), and retire.

No, I wasn’t going to retire and depend on the EXIT(Cash gotten from selling the blog) to sponsor the rest of my life. The plan was to invest in real estate and live off the cash flow from the properties.

Yes, I read Rich Dad Poor Dad. Yes, I understood the four quadrants. Yes, I had in mind to invest over time, not just the exit money—story for another day.

But when Covid happened, a new opportunity presented itself. SMEs and Small businesses were closing up and letting go of their staff. In essence, they were losing money, and their staff were losing their sources of livelihood.

How was this an opportunity? My next post will explain HOW...

HAVING MONEY IS A BAD THING

There! I said what I said.

Before you crucify me, hear me out.

Money is a wonderful thing.

It makes the world go round.

It rewards hard work and smart work.

It is the reason you go to work, or do what you do.

Don't say it is about passion.

Cause you and I know you wouldn't do it for free.

However, one thing is certain, a greater majority of people don't know what money is.

We just know how to use.

Just before you argue it, answer this in 5seconds. What is money?

I'll link to a blog post where I answered this question in the comments section. Click on the link and enjoy the article.

RAISE YOUR RIGHT HAND
If you find it really easy to save

Oya knock yourself with that hand
Do it!

You and I know you just lied to yourself
The average Nigerian thinks about spending
We save grudgingly

Only a few are motivated to save
If you are one of them, I respect you.

However, if you're like me. You love to bambam
And chill with the big boys😂

Here are some tips that might help;

1. Record your expenses (this really helped me. The money I spent on data alone😢)
2. Add savings to your budget
3. Reduce your spending
4. Set savings goals
5. Determine your financial priorities

The list is getting long, I know.
Good thing I explained these properly on our recent blog post. Do check it out.
