The Flooding in Lagos State Will Redefine Real Estate
This year's rainfall has been far heavier than expected. Across several communities in Lagos State, flooding has disrupted daily life and exposed the urgent need for better infrastructure.
In some areas, residents have to use canoes to reach their homes because the roads are completely flooded. Many tenants have been forced to relocate to short-let apartments in areas with proper drainage systems, while others have taken refuge in hotels or with family and friends.
Many roads have been washed away, making transportation difficult. Some residents have developed infections after repeatedly walking through contaminated floodwater, while others have fallen seriously ill. Sadly, lives have also been lost due to the flooding.
Vehicles have been damaged, and buildings in flood-prone areas have become weakened, raising concerns about their structural safety.
We cannot control nature, but we can prepare for it by building infrastructure that will stand the test of time.
What We Must Do
- Stop dumping refuse into gutters and drainage channels.
- Stop building houses on canals and natural waterways.
- Regularly maintain gutters, canals, and drainage systems.
- Engage only qualified architects, civil engineers, and other construction professionals for building projects.
- Encourage communities and private organizations to partner with the government to develop durable infrastructure.
- Educate citizens on the importance of keeping the environment clean and maintaining public infrastructure.
Let us stop being selfish and work together to build a safer, healthier, and more sustainable environment for future generations.

- Good roads
- Effective drainage systems
- Responsible companies
- Quality housing
- Good schools
- Well-equipped hospitals
- Citizens with the right values and character
We should not wait until disasters force us into action. Now is the time to invest in resilient infrastructure that can withstand the challenges of the future.
