NATIONAL HOUSING FUND (NHF) — BUYER EXPLANATION GUIDE
1. What is NHF?
Simple explanation to a buyer:
“NHF is a government-backed housing finance scheme that helps qualified Nigerians buy their own homes by providing access to affordable mortgage loans instead of paying the full property price upfront.”
The idea is:
Buyer contributes → qualifies → gets mortgage financing → buys the property → repays gradually monthly.
⸻
2. Who Can Use NHF?
A buyer can qualify if they are:
✅ Salaried employees
✅ Self-employed Nigerians
✅ Private sector workers
✅ Government workers
✅ Nigerians in the diaspora (under diaspora NHF programmes)
Generally, the buyer must:
* Be an NHF contributor
* Have contributed for at least 6 months (This can be fast-tracked).
* Have proof of income to support repayment
* Meet mortgage requirements
⸻
3. How Does the Buyer Access the Money?
The buyer does not normally receive cash directly.
The process is:
Step 1:
Buyer selects a property.
Example:
Apartment price: ₦50 million
Step 2:
Buyer applies for NHF mortgage through an approved Primary Mortgage Bank.
Step 3:
The mortgage institution evaluates:
* Income
* NHF contribution record
* Property documents
* Ability to repay
Step 4:
If approved, the mortgage finances the purchase.
