Banana Island: The Most Expensive Neighborhood In Nigeria

A building on Banana Island, Nigeria
A friend of mine met a really cute Nigerian girl at a nightclub in Lagos recently. He’s got a certain je ne sais quoi with the ladies. So he approached her, chatted her up for about an hour or so, and was lucky enough to walk away with her phone number and her house address. She asked him to visit her sometime. He promised he would, but he never did.
The reason is this: The lady lives in Banana Island, Nigeria’s most expensive residential area. There are only a few privileged men who can afford to date a girl who lives in Banana Island. My friend is not yet a part of the privileged few.
If you never heard about the Island, now you know. Banana Island is Nigeria’s most extravagant and expensive neighborhood - on par with the Seventh Arrondissement in Paris, La Jolla in San Diego, California and Tokyo's Shibuya or Roppongi neighborhoods.
The exclusive playground of Nigeria’s obscenely wealthy, Banana Island is an artificial island built on reclaimed land in Ikoyi-Lagos. From an aerial view, the island is actually shaped like a banana, hence its name. Sitting on 1.6 million square meters, the sumptuous island is divided into about 535 plots ranging in size from 1,000 square meters and 3,000 square meters.
Banana Island is a place of unrivalled opulence and grandeur. It’s an entirely different world from other parts of the country. It’s a gated community, and its inhabitants enjoy such luxuries as underground electrical systems and water supply networks, 24 hour-electricity supply (the only other place such privileged is the Nigerian President’s residence), extremely tight security, good road layout, a central sewage system and treatment plant and the well-cherished company of fellow wealthy folks.
The island is the most expensive place in Nigeria and one of the most expensive in Africa to own a house. Property on Banana Island is dollar-denominated. The average cost of buying a three bedroom apartment is $2 million. However, if you’re just looking to hang around the island for some time, and not to buy property, you can rent the same apartment for about $150,000 per annum. But there’s a clause: you must pay for an initial minimum term of 2 years - in advance. And there are no refunds. Ever! Also, the tenant is also mandated to pay a ‘service charge’ of $17,000 per annum.
A typical plot of land on the island usually goes for between $4 million and $6 million, and the cheapest building on the island costs upward of $8 million. But because of the ridiculous prices of property on the island, about 60% of the completed buildings are currently unoccupied.
So, who are the people who occupy the land? The list includes multinational corporations, well-paid expatriate employees, corrupt government officials; their concubines (or mistresses), and wealthy businessmen such as Alhassan Dantata, Kola Abiola and Nigeria’s newest billionaire, Mike Adenuga.

Travel by Rocket From New York to Tokyo in 30 Minutes?

Billionaire entrepreneur and founder of SpaceX Elon Musk speaks below a computer-generated illustration of his new rocket at the 68th International Astronautical Congress 2017 in Adelaide, Australia, Sept. 29, 2017.Share on Twitter
U.S. billionaire innovator Elon Musk has unveiled plans for a new rocket that would allow passengers to travel from one continent to another in about 30 minutes.
At a presentation Friday in Adelaide, Australia, Musk showed a video of images of a rocket taking off in New York and landing in various places around the world, including Tokyo and Shanghai.
He said the New York-Shanghai trip could be done in 39 minutes, while a trip from Bangkok to Dubai would take 27 minutes and Tokyo to Delhi would be 30 minutes.
He added that the cost per seat should be about the same as full fare economy in an aircraft.
Musk noted there is no weather outside the Earth's atmosphere to interfere with travel times and said that once you are beyond the atmosphere, "it would be as smooth as silk, no turbulence, nothing."
"If we are building this thing to go to the moon and Mars, then why not go to other places on Earth as well?" Musk said.
Musk, who founded and runs the company SpaceX along with the electric luxury car company Tesla, has long been making plans for rockets to travel to Mars.
Musk said SpaceX plans its first trip to Mars in 2022, carrying only cargo with a key mission to find the best source of water on the Red Planet. That mission would be followed by the first manned mission in 2024. He said the company was aiming to start construction on the first spaceship in the next six to nine months.
Musk said space flights to enable people to travel from one continent to another could help to pay for future missions to Mars

New comers to Lagos always complain of the complex network of roads and bridges within the mega city! Now everyone in the world is invited to try their hands at driving on one of the most complicated overpasses in the world… It’s guaranteed to make you think twice.
Located in the Nan’an District of Chongqing in southwest China, the highway has five layers and around 20 ramps. At any given time, cars can zoom around in eight different directions. The Internet has already expressed its shock and amazement, as well as its concern. How in the world will drivers not get hopelessly confused, or worse—lost?
But Chinese officials reassure everyone that the overpass has been successfully tested. Plus, signs will guide and direct traffic.
'Even if you take the wrong way, then you only have to go around one kilometre or even just five or six hundred metres before there is an option to correct the wrong turn,' one project official told People’s Daily Online.
This massive project began in 2009 and took nearly eight years to complete. Thankfully, motorists won’t need to wait too much longer to go for a spin; the overpass will open next year. But before you hit the road, brush up on essential driving etiquette rules.

WHAT IT WILL COST YOU TO BUY THE WHITE HOUSE!

The White House is worth $397.9 million, according to real-estate listings firm Zillow.
The home of every U.S. president except George Washington gained 15% in value during President Barack Obama's eight years in office, according to a release on Tuesday. Zillow said it first calculated the White House's worth in 2009 using a proprietary algorithm.
"President Obama's term coincided with a massive recovery of the US housing market, and that's reflected in the updated value of the White House," the release noted. Home values across the country are growing at their fastest pace since 2006, with many markets setting new records -- one of the reasons why the White House is worth more now than it has ever been."
In October, U.S. home prices extended to their best levels since the financial crisis, according to the latest data from S&P/Case-Shiller.
Renting the 132-room building at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue would set you back $2.08 million every month, according to Zillow. Zillow in fact has a listing page for the White House which shows off features including a fitness center, basketball court and controlled access.
Obviously, it's off the market, since President-elect Donald Trump effectively signed the lease in November. Trump will be moving from his equally luxurious digs in Trump Tower, New York.
Unlike many former presidents, the Obamas will live in Washington, D.C., after they leave the White House later this week. Their new home, a nie-bedroom house in the nearby neighbourhood of Kalorama, was sold for more than $5 million in 2014 according to CNN.
Zillow estimated that the Obama's monthly rent would be $22,000. Ivanka Trump and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos will be close neighbors.

THE FUTURE OF ROOFING!
Tesla's new rooftop solar panels don’t look like solar panels!!
Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk is giving solar-powered homes a serious uplift. Last Friday night in Los Angeles, the ever-radical tech bigwig revealed the company’s latest project: its own line of sleek “rooftop solar tiles,” along with complementary upgrades to Tesla’s Powerwall home batteries.
With its multi-billion dollar acquisition of leading solar energy provider SolarCity in progress, Tesla has been leading the charge in a burgeoning industry. And a future of PV-integrated roofs—an idea already being explored in tiny houses and electric cars—has also been a much-teased component of the company’s grand plans. Now, we have a closer look at that vision.
Below, five key things to know about Musk’s recent reveal.
1. These definitely don’t look like regular rooftop solar panels
A big draw of these Tesla panels is their inconspicuous aesthetic. Musk unveiled four different types of glass panels integrated with solar cells, ranging from a Tuscan glass tile to a textured glass tile. To the unsuspecting eye, they look just like conventional roof tiling. In fact, Musk chose to showcase the tiles on the Desperate Housewives set at Universal Studios, suggesting just how easily they can be integrated into the standard American home.

2. They’re pretty strong
During his presentation, Musk demonstrated the strength of the tiles with a video showing a drop test. The glass tiles are stronger than materials such as clay and slate, according to Musk, who added that since “it’s made of quartz, it has a quasi-infinite lifetime.”
3. There’s minimal sacrifice in efficiency
Musk claims his glass tiles are 98 percent as efficient as traditional rooftop solar panels so they should be able to produce nearly the same amount of energy.
4. The roof is meant to complement the Powerwall
These new solar roof tiles are designed to work with Tesla’s Powerwall batteries, which also got an upgrade. The Powerwall 2 can store 14 kWh of energy, with a 5 kW continuous power draw, and 7 kW peak—enough to power an entire home and an electric car. The battery is crucial for electricity storage, and when combined with the solar tiles, will get you off the grid.
5. Price details aren’t available (yet)
Details on how to install the actual roof weren’t mentioned either. But according to Musk, the cost of these panels will still be cheaper than the cost of a normal roof plus electricity. He says these panels will be available for installation beginning in the summer of 2017.
