In 2005, the coastal city of Victoria Island in Lagos was in imminent danger of being overwhelmed by ocean surge from the Atlantic Ocean. As part of Eko Atlantic's goal of land reclamation, the Great Wall of Lagos was constructed to protect the shoreline of Victoria Island and early phases of Lekki from coastal erosion.

The Great Wall of Lagos is 9m high above sea level, 8.5km long and 67m wide at the base. The wall is designed to absorb and dissipate strong waves and is built to stand the worst storms in 1,000 years.
