How to Know If Your Site Is Wasting Cement or Not
Cement is one of the most expensive and essential materials in any construction project. Yet, many building sites waste it daily—silently draining your budget without you noticing. Below are key signs and tips to know if your site is wasting cement:
1. No Mix Ratio Standard on Site
If your workers are mixing concrete or mortar without a set ratio (like 1:2:4 for concrete or 1:6 for block laying), they’re likely using more cement than needed. Always define mix ratios based on structural needs and enforce them strictly.
2. Mortar or Concrete Spillage During Work
Excessive cement falling on the ground while laying blocks, plastering, or pouring concrete is a red flag. Train workers to mix only what is needed and work neatly.
3. Leftover Mix Hardened Unused
If concrete or mortar is constantly hardening unused, it means they’re mixing more than necessary. This is common on poorly supervised sites. Encourage small, manageable batch mixing.
4. Weak Blocks or Cracks After Setting
If your site is using more cement yet still producing weak blocks or cracks after plastering, it means the mix is inconsistent. More cement doesn’t equal more strength when not mixed correctly.
5. No Quantity Surveyor or Material Estimate
Without a proper material estimate for each stage of the project, you can’t track how much cement should be used. Engage a professional to give an accurate breakdown.
6. No Record of Cement Usage Per Stage
You should know:
How many bags were used for foundation
How many for block work
How many for lintel and slab
No record = no control = high chance of wastage.
What to Do
Set proper mix ratios and enforce them
Assign someone to monitor cement usage
Keep daily records
Avoid mixing more than needed at a time
Buy from trusted suppliers to avoid fake or low-grade cement
Remember, cement waste might look small per day, but over time, it could cost you hundreds of thousands. Be vigilant.
