A government secretary met his disgrace.
The Enugu State SSG, dispatched to defend Governor Peter Mbah’s failed 180-day water promise, dared to declare that water now flows in “so many places.” The congregation erupted. “It’s a lie!”
The sanctuary became a courtroom, and the people delivered a divine verdict. No longer could the administration hide behind polished press releases reality crashed into the altar.
It was the recoil of a citizenry that has watched lofty pledges evaporate into dust.
While the Governor branded himself a modern-day miracle worker, taps remained dry, and women still trekked kilometres for a bucket of murky hope. Then, before the God of truth, a high official tried to sell a mirage as a river.
The Igbo elders say, “Onye ji eziokwu aga ije, chi ya ewere ụkwụ ya” -- He who walks in truth, his god guards his steps. But the one who walks in lies will be publicly stripped of his robe, even inside a church.
“Ụgha anaghị egbu onye nwe ya ngwa ngwa, mana ọ na-egbu ya n’ihu ọha” -- A lie does not kill its owner immediately, but it slaughters him in public. The SSG’s humiliation is the harvest of a government that sowed deception.
You cannot lie to a thirsty man that his cup is full and expect his amen.
When leadership builds its house on the sand of false promises, the flood of the people’s anger will sweep it into the open for the world to see.
“A government that lies to mislead the people will surely get “It’s a lie!” echoing into the ballot box.
