POPULAR STREETS IN ILORIN AND HOW THEY DERIVED THERE NAMES
GERI ALIMI - Geri Alimi means the city of Alimi. The area was where Sheu Alimi, the Muslim Fulani teacher and his follower inhabited to perform Daawah or preaching.
OKE KURA - When the Alaafin Oluewu invaded Ilorin in 1835, one of the best soldiers he recruited was a Baruba warrior called 'Sona Kpera' nicknamed 'Kura' which means Hyena in the Hausa language.
Kura was surrounded, captured and killed by the Ilorin army in this area known today as Oke Kura (Mount Kura).
ODE OLOHUNMAMUWA - "Olorun mamuwa" means (May God not forsake us). Some say this area is also referred to as Oke Kura, but what we understand is that, there was a prison camp in this area during the war.
ITA OR ORITA OGUNBO - Orita means junction and Ogunbo means War is coming. During the war, an Ilorin stooge or informant was planted at this very junction. He is to raise alarm at the sight of an impending attack. Whenever he perceived the possibility of an attack, he would raise alarm by shouting; OGUNBO O! OGUNBO O!! OGUNBO!!! meaning ''WAR IS COMING''
ITA KUDIMOH - It is believed that this area is where the people of Egba settled in Ilorin. During the war they unleashed a type of 'spirit' that binds the Oyo army together and strangled them to death hence the name "Ita Ikudimo won'' (The street of death binds them).
To this day, there is a family called Ile Egba, which indicates that there are several Yoruba tribes in Ilorin.
There are other clans too such as Agboole Ologbomoแนฃo, Agboole Baba Offa etc.
OKESUNA (MOUNT OF SUNNAH) - This area has been a Muslim dominated area even before the arrival of Alfa Alimi in Ilorin because the area was occupied by renowned Islamic scholar Solagberu and his men when they arrived in Ilorin. Besides being a priest, Solagberu was also a merchant.
Today there are both Yoruba and Hausa sellers in the area. The first primary school in Kwara is known as Okesuna Primary School established in 1915. One of the first graduates of the school was Mallam Muhammadu Ajeigbe Gobir (1900-1960), the first Waziri of Ilorin.
TAIWO ROAD - The Taiwo road was named after Colonel Ibrahim Taiwo, who ruled the state during the 1975-1976 military regime. It was formally known as Oyo Bye-Pass.
