As construction professionals, we are not just building projects and chasing deadlines.
We are responsible for making sure every worker leaves site with the same number of fingers, legs, and teeth they came with ๐Ÿ˜‚

Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world.

And It is also one of the most abused.

The strength of every structure above ground begins with decisions made at mixing stage.

A carpenter, a mason, or an iron bender can humble a civil engineer in five minutes.

The engineers who grow the fastest are usually the ones who listen, observe, ask questions, and learn from everyone around them, including the artisans.

Because experience has a way of teaching lessons that textbooks cannot.

If you disagree with me on this, prove it.

I have met 4 types of Site Engineers.

Only ONE usually gets the next promotion.

1. The "General Overseer" Engineer ๐Ÿ˜‚
Shouts at artisans from 50 meters away.
Never climbs scaffolding.
Signs reports like a celebrity signing autographs.

Result: Artisans develop a new skill called "hiding mistakes."

Respect demanded โ‰  Respect earned.

2. The "Scientific Calculator" Engineer
Can calculate bending moments before breakfast.
Knows every code provision.
But struggles to explain simple instructions to a foreman.

Result: Perfect calculations.
Confused workforce.
Delayed project.

Theory without communication is just expensive knowledge.

3. The "My Brother" Engineer ๐Ÿค
Everybody likes him.
Approves every variation.
Accepts every excuse.

"Engineer, we will do it tomorrow."
"No problem."

"Engineer, cement finished."
"No problem."

"Engineer, client changed everything."
"No problem."

Result: Excellent relationship.
Terrible project.

Being nice is not the same as being effective.

4. The "Balanced" Engineer ๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™‚๏ธโญ
Greets artisans.
Checks drawings.
Listens before talking.
Enforces specifications.
Corrects mistakes without humiliation.
Can joke with workers and still stop bad workmanship instantly.

Result:
โœ… Team respects him
โœ… Client trusts him
โœ… Project progresses
โœ… Promotion follows

Authority + Empathy (Not Sympathy) = Leadership.

The truth?

Most of us started as either Type 1, 2, or 3.

Site experience eventually teaches us that construction is not only about concrete, steel, and drawings.

It's about managing people, solving problems, and making good decisions under pressure.

Question for Engineers, Builders, Architects, and Quantity Surveyors:

Which type were you during your first 6 months on site?

๐Ÿ˜‚ Type 1
๐Ÿ“ Type 2
๐Ÿค Type 3
๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Type 4

Be honest. The comment section is a safe zone... unless your former foreman is here. ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ‘‡

Yesterday evening after work, we all stood on site discussing the next dayโ€™s activities.

Materials were ready.
The client had already been assured of progress.

I looked at my skilled and unskilled labourers and felt confident because everyone agreed on the plan.

As an engineer, those moments give you peace of mind. You go home already calculating how much work will be achieved the next day.

But this morning changed everything.

One of the key people I depended on did not show up.

No proper information.
No early notice.
Nothing.

Suddenly, the workflow was affected.
The labourers were waiting.
Activities could not move as planned.
And the client started asking questions.

At that moment, you realize that construction is not only about drawings, concrete, and measurements.

It is also about managing people, emotions, pressure, expectations, and disappointments.

What pains most is not even the absence itselfโ€ฆ
It is when someone knows how important a task is, gives you full assurance, then disappears when the work is about to begin.

Many people think engineering stress only comes from calculations and deadlines.

No.

Sometimes the real stress comes from coordinating humans on site.

One unreliable person can affect productivity, delay progress, create misunderstanding with clients, and frustrate the entire team.

Now let me ask fellow engineers, supervisors, foremen, and project managers:

If this particular person calls you again for another job opportunity, will you still allow him?

And how do you handle workers who repeatedly disappoint site operations?

Because honestly, this is one part of engineering nobody prepares you for.
