So, the taxi driver who helped me pick up my bag of rice asked how much I got them.
I told him, I didn't buy it. That it is one of the packages I received from my place of work.
He smiled and said. " You have it easy sir. Christmas is sure and eating is not a problem for you and your family."
I smiled back, with a mild reaction not to agree.
“Well! Depending on the quality of the rice; one can get at a decent price”
For few minutes, he utter no words.
I noticed the sudden change in his mood. As we have been engaging well before the rice discussion.
Suddenly he spoke on, (In Yoruba)
"As much as I try to get things done; it becomes more difficult. The economy contributes more to this.
Its easy for me to plan; but to achieve it, is really impossible.
Life is just like a mirage.
From the beginning of the year till now, there is nothing to show for it. Like, I am not working at all.
Now, they have started disturbing me—Christmas this Christmas that. 4 children!
And there are debts to pay”
He finally concluded that Christmas will do itself jare.
I could imagine the pain of a struggling man. People are really not having it easy.
When he drove to my destination, I told him to wait.
I told my wife to get me a sack. I tore the bag and shared it to equal half.
I told him, this should be enough for your family.
He was lost for words, and almost kissed my kneel.
“Christmas is sure and eating is not a problem for you and your family." I said back to him.
He was full of praise.
That unexplainable happiness was written boldly on his face.
Earlier this week, a friend brought to me a bag of rice and a live chicken.
Then I said to myself: Giving is the secret of receiving more.
And, it doesn’t matter the size of what you give.
Just give!
