Metro line 8 from Balard to Créteil has been extended—not underground or on rails, but by cable car 🚠. From the old metro terminus, you can now travel four more stops on line C1, high above the buildings, roads, and obstacles, in a comfortable gondola 🚡 of the new cable line. Affectionately called “Tramway C1” by the RATP, with the “C” referring to Câble. Bon voyage!

January 6: Time for the French tradition of the “Galette des Rois”. This delicious pie is to commemorate the biblical story of the arrival of the 3 wise men who came from far to pay their respect to the new born baby Jesus. Families and groups in homes and offices get together to share the pie. The pie or “galette” invisibly contains a small token. The oldest person around the table cuts the pie while the youngest indicates who gets which piece. The person who finds the token or “fève” in his piece of pie, will be the king or queen that day. Galettes des rois come with paper golden crowns to be worn by the lucky winner. More importantly, his or her demands, wishes and orders will be complied with that same day. The traditional galette des rois is filled with an almond-butter cream called “frangipane” - but there are innovative varieties with apple, chocolate and the likes. A great way to start the year - and give up on that one resolution: losing weight. And... don’t break a tooth!

Walk around in the newest neighborhood inside Paris’ boulevard périphérique: Les Epinettes - in the 17th arrondissement. Under the new Tribunal de Justice (38 floors and 168 meters high) and next to the railway station Pont Cardinet, a whole array of new constructions: housing, offices, roads, parks, public transport (metros 13 and 14 extended - in 5 minutes direct to Châtelet). Resolutely modern, and once the sounds of building equipment and the smell of freshly poured concrete will have subsided, probably a very nice area to live - for those who like it all new and modern! a two minute walk to the square Des Batignolles back into that good old Parisian atmosphere - where people with berets play jeu-de-boules under sycamore trees.

Paris real estate prices continue to rise and are now around 10.500 euros/M2. All arrondissements go up with the 6th (Saint Germain) staying most expensive. Is it the effect of Brexit, the low interest level, or just because so many people want to live in the city of lights?
