A self-built community reflects the people living there: designed in different ways, shapes and materials. Yesterday at Vroondaal in The Hague 🇳🇱. This large area of former farmland (of greenhouse horticulture) has been developed by since early 2000. Everyone loves their home and are excited to be surrounded by the diversity of the other houses. It never bores. Especially on this great sunny day ☀️😎
And this was the last stop of the UK 🇬🇧 delegation It was a pleasure showing them around some great inspirational self-build schemes. To be continued…in the UK 👍.

In the dunes of The Hague (NL 🇳🇱) a new self-built community was developed. The delegation from the UK 🇬🇧 (organised by The Right to Build Task Force) were shown around and also had a peek inside some amazing self-built homes!
Self-builders were given a plot passport with some building regulations like maximum height, building plot boundaries and the procedure of purchasing the plot. For the design they were given a lot of freedom resulting in unique houses and very proud residents. They’ve invested all their creativity, finance and time in creating a home they want. They are rooted, like new dune grass, to stay. 👌🏡

Sunny weekend ahead 😎 Jesse and Michael are getting on with their CLT timber frame home in Rijswijk (NL). The shell was built quickly and now they’re directing their team of professionals to make it their dream home. Also taking on the bits they can do. Or need to do, to save some money for some great features inside the house. Smart 💪

Rain 🌧, falling leaves 🍂, dropping temperatures 🤧 and the Autumn Statement. Perhaps not the happiest times. Our statement remains unedited and positive: self-build for everyone. Because self-builders are always pushing for change, taking responsibility and claiming their profit in creating a better and well-designed home to live a happy live and contribute to their community. And have a coffee together ☕️ ☺️

Self-build homes reflect the choices of the people living in it. And, perhaps your neighbour decides to build with the same (frame) builder. Perhaps you even team up in the process. The only one deciding is yourself. Like in the case of Ronald and Angie and their neighbours. They had the same frame built, but decided on a different layout and look.

Self-build is all about the individual. It takes time to encourage and enable anyone to build their own home, but it is that focus of trying to make it easier and accessible that will bring diversity and choice to the market.
