🦋Hoverflies play an important role in nature as pollinators. When they visit flowers to collect nectar and pollen, they transfer pollen between plants and help facilitate pollination.

🦋A total of 338 hoverfly species have been recorded in Norway. Many species have yellow and black stripes that make them resemble bees or wasps. Despite their appearance, they are completely harmless to humans, as they neither sting nor bite.

🦋Hoverflies are also known for their remarkable ability to hover almost motionless in the air before quickly darting off to the next flower.

This is a Mazarine Blue/Cyaniris semiargus, a beautiful butterfly that can already be seen as early as May in the Fulufjellet national park area.

Characteristics

🦋 White-ringed spots: If you look closely at the black spots on the grey-brown underside of the wings, you can see a distinct, thin white ring surrounding each spot.

🦋 Lack of orange markings: It has no orange or reddish spots along the edge of the wing underside, which helps distinguish it from several other butterfly species.

🦋 Dark upper wings: A glimpse of the upper side of the hindwing reveals a dark brown coloration. This indicates that the butterfly in the photo is a female, as males have a deep violet-blue upper wing surface.

The Black Woodpecker/Dryocopus martius is a large woodpecker measuring 40–46 cm in length, with a wingspan of 67–73 cm, making it the largest woodpecker species in Europe. It weighs between 250 and 370 grams and is easily recognized by its glossy black plumage, pale eyes, and striking red crown. In terms of size, it is roughly comparable to a crow.

Photographer Magnar Putmoen was fortunate enough to capture the Black Woodpecker in flight.

A mature female moose, also called a cow moose/alces alces, is the adult female of the species and a common sight in and around Fulufjellet nasjonalpark.

In Norway, the moose is often called “the king of the forest” because it is the country’s largest land mammal.

A fully grown female moose usually weighs between 280 and 400 kilograms. She consumes large amounts of food every day, mainly twigs and leaves. During a single day, she may eat between 9 and 14 kilograms of twigs, and her food intake often increases significantly during the summer.

In spring, the female moose usually gives birth to one or two calves.

Red squirrel / Ekorre / Eichhörnchen / Wiewiórka / Eekhoorn / 松鼠 / Ekorn / Sciurus vulgaris

A characteristic feature of the squirrel is its long, bushy tail, which helps it maintain balance when jumping between branches. The tail also helps keep the animal warm while it sleeps.

Squirrels typically weigh between 200 and 400 grams and can reach a body length of up to 24 cm. Their tails are usually 14–19 cm long. Males and females are approximately the same size.

The long ear tufts, fluffy grey and rusty-red fur, and large dark eyes are especially noticeable in this image.
