An incredible achievement from our Director Stephen Barfoot and his son Cole, who recently completed the Edinburgh Marathon in East Lothian.
By running across the finish line, Cole joined an extremely small and exclusive club: heart transplant recipients who have completed a marathon.
In 2023, Cole moved to Edinburgh to begin his Masters degree in Theoretical Physics. But by the end of the year, at just 18 years old, he went into heart failure. On Christmas Day, he received a life-saving heart transplant at the Golden Jubilee Hospital near Glasgow.
Fast forward to marathon day this year, where Cole lined up for the Edinburgh Marathon after balancing university exams right up until the day of the race, leaving limited opportunity to train.
To make things even tougher, race day was the hottest May day the UK has experienced in 79 years. Stephen shared that “it was absolutely baking on the course.” Thankfully, Cole had an amazing support crew who kept him encouraged, hydrated and fuelled throughout the race.
Throughout the marathon, Cole carefully monitored his heart rate and hydration levels. Following a heart transplant, there's no nerve connection to the heart, so the body cannot directly control the heart rate. The immunosuppressant medication he takes also increases the risk of kidney and liver damage, making the challenge even greater.
“The last 20km were brutal for Cole,” Stephen shared. “But he really dug deep, kept going, and finished in style!”
An inspiring story of resilience, determination and courage, and one we’re incredibly proud to share. 💙
