Old Windsor Castle, Parnell, 1884. Thomas O'Beirne, propietor. 12-4099. Walsh Memorial Library, The Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT).
"A man named Stafford, while in a drunken state, created some sensation in Parnell on Saturday night by riding a horse up five stone steps into the hall of the Old Windsor Castle Hotel. The licensee, Mr O'Beirne, and others had much difficulty in getting rid of the unwelcome visitors. Stafford wanted to be allowed to ride upstairs, but the landlord peremptorily refused permission for the attempt, and as there was not room in the hall to turn the horse there was a great deal of difficulty in backing him out. A large crowd collected, but finally the horse and rider were ejected without any damage being done." (NZ Herald 18 May 1884)
